A few weeks ago I had to change a flight from Vietnam as I had booked it a month too early. Well... Turns out that wasn't the only flight I had booked a month early

Oh, wow - I missed you in Bangkok by literally three weeks. :o
Serious recommendations - go to the Golden Mountain (great views and a wonderful atmostphere), and Wat Pho for the Reclining Buddha (ideally via river bus so you get to see Wat Arun). If you want any cool craft-y or present-y stuff go to Silom Road at night; and while you're on Silom Road, go to Secret Recipe for the BEST CAKE OF YOUR LIFE.
Outside of those, I really liked the city generally - all my Bangkok photos are up here, if you're interested.
Aw noes! you mean if I had got my original flight I would have met you? :)
I was in Bangkok 3 years ago, and liked it then. Things seem to be a LOT more organised now - though that may be due to unconcious comparisons with my last stop...
Cat - are you back to Scotland for good now, or are you returning to Oz?
That's really interesting; the guy I was there with had been there, like, ten years ago or something and he said the place was essentially unrecognisable. He said that Thaksin Sinawatra must have cleaned up the city as much as he claimed was going to. Having never been there before, I really liked it - a lot more than I was expecting to, to be honest.
As to my plans, well. All I can tell you is all I know, which is that I'm at least here until the end of the Festival in August. But I didn't get to go to Vietnam or Laos, so I'm going back to SE Asia at the end of '08. My provisional plan is to return to Edinburgh, but that may possibly change to Cananda, somewhere in Western Europe or the Far East somewhere depending on my mood at the end of this year.
Equally provisionally, if I were going back to Australia to live (which I unfortunately can't rule out yet), it wouldn't be for a few years.
To be honest I can't give you a balanced view yet - yesterday I spent sleeping and today I've just uploaded photos and recovered from residual Delhi belly! Still the Khao San area looks amazingly improved - though with the amount of big businesses muscling in I'm unsure how much longer it will be non-corporate, as it were. The roads are great, rubbish has vastly decreased and the whole place is FAR less seedy. Whether it has to do with Thaksin, I can't say... I'll report more in a couple of days!
Aw - guess I'll be missing you this time round so - I'll be back in July myself. If I get a surprise suitcase of cash land in front of me from a passing aeroplane (it could happen!) I may well call up to Edinburgh afterwards!
