I keep reading about all this terrible stuff happening in New Orleans, and more and more people are dead, and I'm sad about the city being destroyed. I visited it once a few years ago, and I just loved it. There was so much history and great architecture, and now it may all be ruined. I guess that makes me a horrible person.

If that's true, that makes me a horrible person too. I do feel terrible for the people -- not just the ones who died or lost loved ones, but the ones who DID leave and lost everything. Because it's bad enough losing your home and your belongings, but your CITY too? And yeah, the city! I've never been there, but just seeing the destruction makes my gut twist. And it's a different sort of destruction than the Asian tsunami, because that was loss of life but relatively little infrastructure there to damage. But when you look at things like bridges and massive buildings... there's just this illusion of stability and permanence. And then mother nature comes along and shatters your blissful ignorance. :(
