Working in an organic grain trading company in the past has taught me the benefits of organic food. The main thing against genetically modified food are a couple of things. 1. There was little research on the long term risks (if any) of the modifications. Plants that create their own insecticides sounds pretty bad. 2. Organic food tastes better. Look at your average tomato. When modern equipment started to be used in harvesting tomatoes they were being crushed. To combat this tomatoes were genetically modified to be tougher to stand up against the use of combines. It worked, but the tastes is not a strong as before and the color not as bright.

And the worst offense of Monsanto is selling crops that produce sterile seeds. Thus instead of a farmer keeping a portion of his crops to re-plant the next year, he/she is forced to buy more seed from Monsanto. That is just greedy and wrong in my opinion.

Thanks for those comments Uberrod.
1. The lack of research is a good point. There are lots of plants that naturally produce their own insecticides though, and some that produce herbicides for that matter. 2. A valid point, though maybe not ultimately as important if high yield agriculture can produce more food at a lower price to feed the hungry (whether it actually *gets* to the hungry is another matter entirely!). 3. This point is the most important IMO. It seems to set up a seriously bad social structure, especially when we're talking in the context of developing countries.

Thanks!

By the way, you said "there *was* little research on the long term risks." Is there more good data now, and how has that picture shaped up?

I don't know. But as of 4-5 years ago there wasn't much research that I knew about. I didn't want to say there isn't any research without having any knowledge. of the matter
