Ianto woke slowly, to a semi-dark room. He stretched and turned, checking the clock on the bedside table: 02:35. He sighed and glanced across to the lamp beside the armchair in the far corner of the room. Jack was sitting there, reading a book. He hadn’t yet noticed Ianto was awake.

“Well, this is better than your pacing,” said Ianto.

Jack glanced up at him and grinned apologetically. “Sorry, did I wake you?”

Ianto shook his head. “It doesn’t matter.” He sat up a bit. “What are you reading?”

Jack held the book up. “The Picture of Dorian Grey.”

Ianto raised his eyebrow. “Looking for tips on how to stay young and beautiful?”

Jack gave Ianto a look. “Watch it with the smart mouth.”

Ianto just grinned. He pulled back the covers. “Come back to bed?”

Jack’s eyes skirted away. “I couldn’t sleep.” He sighed and his head fell back against the back of the armchair. “Damn nightmares.”

Ianto frowned, then got up and went over to Jack. He perched on the arm of the chair. “Was it one of the really bad ones?”

Jack’s arm went around his bare waist and came to rest at the waistband of Ianto’s boxers. “Yeah.” He turned his head and pressed his face into Ianto’s shoulder for a moment.

Ianto ran his fingers through Jack’s hair. He understood about nightmares. He’d been there by Jack’s side so many times when he’d woken screaming, sweating and sometimes crying after a nightmare. He’d held him, comforted him and listened to him. He’d had his fair share of nightmares himself and Jack had been there for him as well.

Jack pulled back from the lose embrace and breathed out. “It doesn’t matter. Don’t you worry about it. You should go back to bed, you know.”

Ianto shook his head. “Nuh uh. I’m not going to bed without you.”

Jack sighed and put his head back to look up at Ianto. “You really should, you know. You need your sleep.”

“Yes, and so do you.”

“Ianto, you know I really don’t.”

Ianto tutted. “Come off it. Even Big Damn Heroes need their sleep.”

Jack smiled and allowed Ianto to take the book out of his hands. Ianto marked his place with his bookmark, then placed the book on the lamp table. He found Jack’s hand and gripped. “Come on. Bed, now.”

Jack laughed as Ianto tugged him up and back to bed. “Orders are orders, I guess.”

Ianto took Jack back into bed and they curled up together under the covers. For a while they lay without speaking, just holding each other. Jack stroked Ianto’s warm skin and held him tight.

Ianto sighed. “You like to pretend you’re a superhero, Jack but you’re not.”

“Ianto …”

Ianto opened his eyes and looked at him. “No, listen to me, Jack.”

Jack closed his mouth and listened.

“You are a hero, Jack. You’re my hero and the hero of millions of humans who don’t even know your name. But you’re not superman.”

Ianto looked so stern and serious that Jack wanted to giggle. But he kept quiet. Ianto cupped his chin and met his eyes sternly. “You’re only human, Jack. Time you started acting like it a bit more.”

Jack sighed into Ianto’s firm hold on him. “And what does that mean?”

Ianto smiled a bit and relaxed. “It means you spend your nights sleeping like a normal person.”

Jack smiled too and burrowed into Ianto, pressing his face into the warmth of Ianto’s neck. “It’s hard though, Ianto. The dreams I have …”

Ianto held Jack close and stroked his back. “I know.”

There was silence for a long time. Then Jack raised his head from Ianto’s shoulder and looked at him with wet eyes. “Am I really your hero?”

Ianto grinned and stroked Jack’s cheek. “Yep. My Big Damn Human Hero.”
