Part I

“A little jealousy never hurts.”

Mary Margaret looked up at her roommate in question over breakfast the next morning. She had just finished telling Emma about what had happened the night before with David, followed by her encounter with Dr. Whale. After she had finished the story is when Emma said the bit about jealousy.

“What do you mean?” Mary asked. “Jealousy for me? I am, unfortunately, plenty jealous. I’m not sure how it’s a good thing.”

Emma shook her head. “No, Mary, that’s not what I mean. I mean for David. Seeing you with Dr. Whale.”

“But he didn’t.”

“You just said that you and Whale were going to try another date, didn’t you?”

Mary blinked. “I wouldn’t say it’s a date. I would say it’s just…well, going to a movie together.”

“Call it what you want to me or to Whale, but David doesn’t need to know it’s just ‘hanging out’. That could work to your advantage.”

Mary laughed lightly. “Emma, you went from discouraging me from pursuing David to now encouraging me. Why the sudden flip?”

Emma sighed. “Because I don’t like how it all fell apart. He suddenly gets his memories back and goes back to her work it out after pursuing you so hard? He got your hopes up and then dashed them all to hell. You’re my friend so I…well, I kind of want to make him suffer.” She looked so sheepish that Mary couldn’t help but laugh again.

“This is all assuming that David will find out about my going out with Whale tonight. It’s not like I’m going to advertise that I am.”

Emma shrugged and grinned. “It’s a small town. He could find out.”

Mary didn’t look convinced. “I doubt it.”

**********

David smiled absently at something Katherine said as they walked down Main Street together, enjoying the Christmas lights that were already hung. It was a mild night and the last thing David had wanted was to stay inside and talk some more about his marriage troubles with Katherine. He still didn’t feel like himself. He still felt like the David Nolan pre-memory, not the post-memories David Nolan.

He did not feel close to Katherine, despite his memories. He still felt so far removed from her, from their marriage, from the life they’d had together. He kept thinking of the one person that made him feel whole.

Mary Margaret. His heart ached at the thought of her. He missed her desperately. Her smiles, her shyness, and the blush that would creep on her cheeks when he would skirt the lines of impropriety and flirt with her. There were times in the middle of the night when he would wake up and feel as though he could not breathe for the want of her sleeping next to him. There had been times when he’d reached for her only to find Katherine beside him instead. He would either roll over and get as far away as he could from her in the King bed or get up and sleep the rest of the night on the couch.

Katherine commented a few times at his odd behavior but he just made up some lame excuse about finding the bed uncomfortable some nights after having been in the hospital bed so long. She would look at him oddly but make no comment about it. He could tell she wanted to, but feared angering him in any way so she wouldn’t. And that is what ended up angering him.

He had considered trying to explore some of the troubles they’d been having before, mostly just a case of being in a place where neither of them was getting what they wanted and needed from the other person, but David just had no real desire. A large part of him just simply did not care. And that would make him feel guilty so he would stay. And try to be a good husband.

But he didn’t feel like one. When Katherine tried to kiss him, he thought of Mary and what it would be like to kiss her instead. He’d give her a peck and move on, trying not to feel more guilt by the hurt look she’d get on her face. And making love to her…well, that had certainly not happened yet. When he thought of it he would think of Mary Margaret. Of what it would feel like to have her petite form under him, holding onto him, moaning her desire. He bet her skin would feel like silk.

As if he’d conjured her up by simply thinking about her, he heard her laugh and looked up. A smile was growing on his face just from the sound alone then died when he saw her.

On the arm of Dr. Whale. They were coming out of the small movie theater and she was laughing gaily with her arm looped through his.

Talk about feeling as though he’d just been punched in the gut.

“Oh look, David! It’s Mary,” Katherine said cheerfully. A little too cheerfully. He wondered briefly if she was desperate to break up the monotony of his silence. “We should say hello.”

“Should we?” he blurted out. Could he stand there in front of Mary watching her touch another man, no matter how innocent and not punch the good doctor in his face? There was something a little smarmy about the doctor that David had picked up on right away. It hadn’t seemed that Mary had been a big fan herself but now here she was, holding on to his arm and laughing as though she was flirting with him. Flirting. With Dr. Whale.

“On second thought,” he said. “Let’s. Mary!”

Mary looked over and her smile fell in increments. Seeming to catch herself, she plastered a fake smile on her face. Dr. Whale leaned down to whisper in her ear and she nodded. David gritted his teeth at the intimacy of Dr. Whale whispering in Mary’s ear.

David tugged Katherine with him and they crossed the nearly empty street hurriedly. “David,” Katherine whined. “You have longer legs than I do. Can you not walk so fast and drag me behind you?”

David ignored her as he looked pointedly at Mary. “Hi, Mary.” Realizing he couldn’t ignore the doctor he nodded at the other man. “Whale.”

The doctor burst into laughter and three faces turned to him in alarm. He held up his hands and chuckled. “Sorry, but hearing that…well, it sounded a bit like you were calling me a whale.”

Mary started to giggle as did Katherine. David just frowned.

“And,” the doctor continued, “You can clearly see I am not.”

Mary just shook her head and smiled with a little roll of her eyes.

“What movie did you see?” Katherine asked curiously. She pointed at the billboard. “It looks like you had two choices: ‘Enchanted’ and ‘Fatal Attraction’. Wow. Couldn’t get two more different movies if you tried, huh?”

“We saw ‘Fatal Attraction’,” Dr. Whale replied. “The mayor pulled ‘Enchanted’ before it could have its first showing in Storybrooke.”

Katherine’s eyes went wide. “Really? How odd.”

David, for some reason, didn’t find it quite that odd. Neither did Mary if the look on her face was any indication.

“Well, we don’t want to keep you,” Mary said suddenly and smiled at Katherine and David. Though she would not meet David’s eyes, much to his chagrin. “Goodnight.”

“Yes, g’night, Nolans!” Dr. Whale called as he escorted Mary down the street, heading for the diner that was still open.

“Well, that was nice,” Katherine said. “Mary deserves to be happy.”

“She does,” David said tightly. With me . Seemed he’d be paying Miss Mary Margaret a visit tomorrow.
