Well, they are literally badges of honor in this world. They show off what you and your Pokemon can do. It's to gain respect from both trainers and your Pokemon, but also you have to have all eight to challenge the top-most trainers in the world.

As the bug-type was right next to the 'Gear, it promptly goes flying. The video shuts off, and all that's heard is an ungodly loud insect shriek, several thumps, and poor Larvitar making a responding yell as the gear bounces off his head.
