I like this application of ass to chair thing. Although it might seem counterintuitive, I haven't taken a painting class since elementary school.

Although, the question of "block" is still open for me, I guess it's different -- because trying to paint while I feel blocked (or have binged on caffeine and it is three in the morning) will result in a ruined painting, while trying to write during block will only result in a ruined draft the original of which can be recovered.

i think steve martin wrote something about how writers are privileged, because if we feel stuck in the middle of a piece we can go out into the garden and smell the flowers and contemplate the soul of the rose or whatever and let it inspire us. if painters do the same, their paint dries into a hard mass.
