I had a supervisor much like what you describe of Suzanne. She just seemed to have it out for me or something--treated me differently than any of the other student assistants in the International Office--taking stuff out on me and criticizing constantly. I began dreading going to work, though I once loved my job. After working for the International Office for 2 years, I quit because I couldn't take the verbal abuse from her anymore. Wish I had had the guts to go to anyone about it, but I was too paralyzed by fear at the time --afraid of a backlash from her. I moved to a different department and it was much better there, though I did miss the international students a lot. I admire that you went to HR about it. No one deserves to be treated that way.
Wow, that sounds quite immature of her. That's worlds apart from what it's like at my work - this (well-written) blog post sums it up well though, if you're interested (it's long, but only the "independence and autonomy" and "no politics" parts are relevant). http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/FieldGuidetoDevelopers.html
