Animenaissance

Jan 18, 2011 10:20

So one of the defining characteristics of our Guangzhou vacation (besides eating lots of western food, I happily note) was watching a veritable glut of anime. I'm not really sure what factors pushed us in this direction; all I know is one day we were kind of bored and googled "Best Anime of 2010" and our lust was born. We discovered file-uploading ( Read more... )

I read this, but don't have any suggestions, sorry. Good to hear of your foreign adventures, though.

Oh man, I'll probably never watch Mitsudomoe because the art style really pushed all the wrong buttons for me.
That's too bad. It's really worth trying to persevere through, though; some of the jokes were just outrageously funny. Especially their poor dad. Is it seriously worse than Beamspan Jesus?

I am sort of interested in Yumeiro Patissiere though!
Dude, it is so awesome. I'd be willing to watch it all again over Skype if we could figure out a time that would work every week. But even if we can't, it's absolutely worth it. At first it seems really cheesy, but when the Cake Grand Prix starts it's so exciting you just can't help but overlook the stupid fairy stuff. And I have to say, there are some really great plot twists, too!

And I also want to see more mahou shoujo shows but I'm not sure where to start either.
Well, if I come up with some interesting sounding ones, I'll let you know. All I can think of off the top of my head is Shugo Chara, but I remember some parts of it being just laughably cheesy.

Hey, Ash! I'm still reading. Still in Korea until this coming December, but I'll be heading past your area in July (on my way to SINGAPORE!)

Too bad y'all can't make it up towards Dalian. I'd come over from Gunsan to visit y'all. :D

Wow, great news about Singapore! That's really great. Unfortunately we have pretty much no appreciable breaks in the spring semester for traveling and we both teach 5 days a week...I don't think we'll be going anywhere until August, when we take Nick's parents around China.

I watched the first episode of Mitsudomoe Season two and nearly clawed my face off between the art, the lame jokes and the weird attempts to be meta. Maybe not the best place to start but I found it starkly bad.

For slice of life, if you havn't seen K-On yet, give that a whack.

I have to say I'm flabbergasted that everyone complains so heavily about the art. I don't really get it, and it didn't bother me one bit. But, everyone appreciated different things; I can understand that.

Attempts to be meta? You lost me there.

Really? Because every time I see clips from it I always feel like "I've seen this show before." But hey, thanks for the suggestion.

For Mutsidumoe, art wise I was told that the characters were like... 11... and they look like some bizarre combination of 11 and like... 15 which kind of creeps me out any time any female is on screen, especially since there is ostensibly an adult female in the first episode of season two that looks exactly the same as the kids do.

Remember I just picked Episode one of Season 2 to see if I could put up with the tone and style of the show. It centered around some transforming robot show the three girls were watching, so it tried to do some sort of thing where you were the viewers with them...

Yeah I was expecting something... else from K-On and instead have gotten something that, at least for me with my music background is really fun to watch. I'm up to episode 6 right now and it's making me think of Azumanga Daioh with music and more coherent story.

I'm still reading off and on.

I sadly, do not have any recommendations. I've been in an anime slump for quite some time with no new series to watch (plus grad school is taking over my life, lol.) I'm interested in checking out the ones you mentioned --the cooking anime sounds fun. :)
