8 Things I Love About China & 3 I Don't

Even though we’ve been here nearly 9 months already, this week China has felt very different. It wasn’t the climate, it wasn’t classes…it was a subtle sense of temporality. Knowing that we’re going to be leaving in July really gives everything an almost nostalgic air, which caused me to ponder on the bus (at the risk of almost missing my stop) what ( Read more... )

Pro's:

1. And there I was wondering if you had plenty-available bakeries...

4. The tea culture sounds interesting. If we ever meet in real life then I expect some tea. Maybe I'll bring you some South African teas as well, and you can smile and pretend you like it.

2. Ugh.

3. Sounds like South African bureaucracy. Its a pretty bleak nightmare here as well.

Most days Kunming IS awesome, but there are some "bad" China days when you just get really frustrated with everything. Actually I've come to believe that contrary to popular Internet belief, culture shock is not something you get over in a month or three. It's more like a "9 out of 10 days are fine, but the tenth is terrible." That is, you can be having a great week but then suddenly have an unexpectedly frustrating day, or a day when you really get homesick, etc.

I LOVE hot tea. My Korean roommate would always make green tea for us --it took some getting used to to drink tea w/o the sugar, but now I love it that way. British teas are my favorite, though green tea is a close second.

Naicha sounds really good.

Oy! Ash! Let me know when you get settled into Japan. I'm looking at coming to visit the country in late November. 1 week's worth. :)
