The sun was just setting, and Wendell and Vincent were sitting outside their house on the front porch. Wendell was sitting down on a chair, while Vincent was lying down across multiple chairs with his head resting in Wendell's lap, while Wendell stroked his hair.
"Wow, someone really needs to rake up those leaves," Wendell said with a yawn,
"Yeah, probably," Vincent said, and then closed his eyes. Wendell knew that there was an interesting fact on the way, because that's the way it always is. "Did you know that leaves have as much yellow pigment in them as green, but because the green is darker, the yellow doesn't show till the autumn when the green starts to fade?"
"No, I did not know that," Wendell said, smiling at Vincent, "that's interesting."
"I know."
"Hey, Vince, when you were a kid, did you play in the piles of fallen leaves?"
"Nope, my father always raked them up before me or my sisters had a chance."
Wendell felt a little sad for Vincent about that. When he was a kid, he'd always look forward to autumn so he and his brothers and sister could jump in the leaves. It was always really fun, and the autumns of his childhood were some of his favourite memories.
"Vin, get up for a sec, I have an idea."
Vincent sat up, shifting so he was sitting up on the chair closest to Wendell. Wendell stood up and held his hand out to Vincent, who placed his hand in Wendell's as he pulled him up from his seat.
"What's your idea?" Vincent asked as Wendell guided him off the porch and into the front yard.
"You'll see," Wendell said, smiling as they stopped in front of the leaf pile.
"Okay, I see leaves..."
"Thank you, Captain Obvious, I'm aware of that. Now jump in the leaves."
"Wendell, I'm 21 years old."
"So? Just do it."
"You first!"
"Fine then," Wendell stepped into the pile of leaves, and started to jump, laughing like it was the most fun he'd had in his life. He held out his hands and grabbed Vincent's arm, making him jump too.
There they were, two grown men, jumping around in a pile of leaves in the dark, giggling like little kids. The thought of how ridiculous they looked made them laugh even harder.
And then Vincent fell over, pulling Wendell down with him.
"Ow," Vincent flinched as he hit the ground, then again when Wendell fell on top of him.
"You okay?"
"Yeah, you?"
"Fine."
They started to laugh again as they still laid there in the pile of leaves.
"You're right, that was fun." Vincent said, grinning.
"Told you so."
"Until I fell over."
"Of course."
Wendell stood up. helping Vincent up as he did so. Vincent was smiling still, Wendell guessed he was happy about being able to act like a kid again.
"You sure you're okay, Vin?" Wendell asked as they stood in the yard, dusting dirt and grass off their clothes and checking themselves for any injury.
"Yeah," Vincent said again, "Don't think I have any broken bones, maybe a few bruises."
"Think I might too," Wendell said, stretching a little, then decided to check his hair for dirt. "So, you happy about getting to act like a little kid again?"
"Yes, but it's such a shame my sisters weren't here to experience it with me."
Wendell smiled, wrapping his arms around Vincent's waist and pulling him closer, closing the space between them, and then catching his lips in a kiss. Vincent kissed back, then backed up to the tree behind him for support. He reached his hands up to unbutton Wendell's shirt, and then Wendell broke the kiss.
"Vincent, c'mon, not out here."
"Why not?"
"We're not going to do it outside!"
"Why?"
"Because... just can't you wait till we get inside?"
"Okay..."
