Ever since Jeff was little, Mrs. Sterling had a ceramic cow. She loved that cow, but neither Jeff nor his siblings knew where the cow came from, or why it was so special. But they all knew, as to not make their mother upset, to not break the cow.
One day, when Jeff was 17, he brought his boyfriend / best friend, Nick Duval over to his home for some of the summer holidays. Nick was polite, despite his usually rather aggressive nature towards others, to Jeff's parents and siblings, and the vacation was going well.
The day before Nick was due to go back to his parents house, something terrible happened, whilst they were singing One Direction. (Originally, Jeff did not care for 1D, but after hearing it enough from his little sister, he started to develop a fondness for them. Plus, their songs were Warbler perfect.)
"Baby, you light up my world like nobody else!" Jeff sang, rather loudly while dancing.
"The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed!" Nick did the same.
"But when you smile at the ground, it ain't hard to tell,"
"You don't know, oh oh! You don't know you're beautiful!" They sang together, and Jeff took Nick's hand and twirled him around. Nick did a rather enthusiastic jump, when they both heard a smash.
Jeff gasped. "Oh my God, Nicky... you broke the cow." The blond was pointing at shards of black, white and pink ceramics lying on the floor next to Nick's foot, a look of horror on his face.
"Cow? What?" Nick asked, and looked down at the shattered remains. "Oh dear God, the cow."
Nick remembered the cow from his many childhood visits to the Sterling household. Mrs. Sterling sure loved that cow.
"What are we going to do?" Jeff asked, panicky.
"No idea!" Nick shouted, now panicking as well.
"Boys, what happened?"
Jeff breathed in dramatically. "Oh my God, Mommy, I'm sorry, Nicky broke the cow on accident, Mommy I'm so sorrryyy!" he yelled, almost starting to cry, enveloping his mother in a hug.
"It's okay, Jeffery," Mrs. Sterling said, rubbing her son's back comfortingly. "It's alright."
"Are you sure?" Jeff whimpered, looking at his mother with tears in his eyes.
"Yes, sweetie, as long as you clean it up."
Jeff, cheerful as ever again, ran into the kitchen to collect the broom.
"Umm, Mrs. Sterling, I'm really sorry," Nick said awkwardly.
"It's alright, Nicholas, it's just a ceramic cow," Mrs. Sterling left the room, back where she was previously.
Just a cow, huh? Nick thought, as he was sure he heard sniffling from Mrs. Sterling's direction.
