I'm copying and pasting my reply to someone else's post because I feel it encompasses most if not all of my thoughts. It may seem disjointed and/or hard to read...but too bad for you. Deal.
I agree about Snape. He's one of my favorite characters, but he's a dipshit. No, being bullied as a teenager does NOT give you the right to bully others back. It puts you on your tormentors' level. In fact, in Snape's case it's even more awful. James and Sirius were kids picking on kids. Not excusable, but it's between people with the same degree of authority (which is to say, none). Snape as an adult picked on kids in his classes (Neville anyone?). He's in a position of power, and he makes life hell for 11-year-olds. What a sign of maturity. And as far as I can recall, Harry did nothing to warrant his hatred except the misfortune of being born one-half Potter. For all Snape's bitterness, Harry strikes me as more like his mother than his father. Snape has a stupid grudge

I disagree about Lupin not being capable to fight. He has to be competent otherwise, why would he have been hired on as the DADA teacher? The only teacher who they willingly hired whose credentials were never mentioned was Quirrell's, and even so, I assume that he had great credentials too. I mean, they hired Lockheart who was a "Published Dark Arts Expert" and "Alastor Moody" who was one of the better Aurors of the day. They had to have had a reason to bring in Remus

Oh, I think he's competent and capable of fighting; it's just that if one of them WERE to stay home with the baby, it should have been him, because Tonks is an actual, professional dark-wizard fighter.
Yeah, I have that problem, too. Like I said a few times already, fandom Lupin drinks tea, reads books, wears sweaters, and is generally quaint and cool. But that's all interpretation. And though I think it's fun to go back and interpret the text in a slashy way, people forget that it probably is not intentional on JKR's part. I mean, I think it would have been awesome if she had written a character as gay - bonus points if it's a character with actual development and a personality. But it didn't happen. Move on and write fanfic. There are a number of characters who we don't see married/dating and pairings that didn't get sunk. And hell, if you want to write AU Remus/Sirius where neither of them die, go ahead. I don't get the insistence that Lupin of all people is gay. Yes, there's the whole reunion with Sirius and the joint
