"I just recently read from one of the essays I was editing that women in ISKCON tend to load themselves up with food and get really fat because of their lack of spiritual strength."

Wow. That is one of the most wrong things I've heard in a long time.

Might it, instead, have something to do with the super-fatty cooking that goes on in most temples? I'm fairly sure that lack of spiritual strength doesn't make one gain weight. Bogus. Totally.

Yeah, but if you look into psychology, it might seem reasonable, because if we feel insecure in our environments, we tend to compensate by eating... simple psychology...

Hm.. still not buying it. Sounds too much like something a puffed up brahmacari would say.

It's not always eating, it can be not eating enough or numerous other things we do because of stress. It's not fair to categorize all overweight devotee women like that.

I don't know, I don't think weight has anything to do with your spirituality. There are plenty of very devoted and nice matajis who are a bit on the heavy-side, but that doesn't hinder their service or devotion. Where does this conclusion come from?

This quote comes from a study on ISKCON, conducted by a lady, but I don't remember her name, save that it wasn't devotional. Maybe her first name was Sally. Anyway, it's just a reference one of the college students was making in his essay to the study. But I'm sure she didn't state in her book that ALL women in ISKCON that are on the heavy side have problems in their spiritual lives:P No need to jump to conclusions here.

I guess that both men and women who are following strictly sometimes compensate by (over)eating. I know i did! ;) It's practically the only physical pleasure left for devotees. We're not yet pure devotees by far, so i think it's a pretty natural thing to do. I'm just wondering why the student singles out women in the essay.
Prasadam in most temples isn't the healthiest thing around to say the least. And besides that, most temple-devotees don't get any physical exercise. Might that be the cause of devotees getting fat and unhealthy?

Completely true. I guess that's why I'm getting fat also:P
