Olympic Update, some assembly required...

Oh the insanity of Olympic Knitting. At hhw's suggestion, I have joined the knitting Olympics. My chosen project is a cute little knitted penguin. The knitting part actually went quite fast. I had him knit by the end of the weekend. But the assembling, that's the challenge. Yesterday afternoon I finished sewing his little body together ( Read more... )

Olympic events watched while knitting: 0
Olympic events watched: 30 seconds of men's curling (why are there separate men's and women's events for this?)

I'm about 75% done with my main event.

Congratulations! What color yarn are you using? I am going with traditional penguin colors, although I briefly toyed with making some sort of psychaelic disco penguin. Perhaps some other time. I do so love the penguins.

I am intruigued by the mystique of the Clapotois (sp?) At first glance I thought it nice but felt no need to make one, but now that I see everyone in the knitting world making one, I want to try one too. I am such a bandwagon jumper. I have been wasting far too much time reading knitting blogs these days.

For a long time I thought it was Claptois, but in fact it is Clapotis. The name is not my favorite thing about it.

I don't know why they're popular in the knitoblogosphere, but I can tell you why I wanted to try it:

1. not too complicated: no seams or no intricate pattern but just enough content to be interesting.
2. it's a scarf-shawl hybrid. I don't need more scarves. I've got one large shawl I wear often at home, but it's fairly rough and comparable to my house slippers: comfortable but not suitable for public viewing.
3. didn't need a lot of yarn, but was also a good showcase for the yarn, so it would be a good choice for really nice stuff that would make a prohibitively expensive sweater.

It's the bearfoot yarn painted these colors though the picture doesn't do it justice. The colors are deeper than that IRL, and there are more of the dark reds and blues overall.

This evening I finished the knitting portion of the event; weaving in the ends and blocking still remain.

How tall is the penguin?

The penguin is about 8-10 inches high. The knitting of penguin number 2 was finished this morning. And in true fashion, I began knitting a new pair of socks in a cool raindrop pattern, rather than begin assembling number 2. Perhaps I will work on that this afternoon while Tik Tok repairs toilets at my parent's house. I also have many baskets of laundry to put away, one of my least favorite jobs.

Your yarn is lovely. I am looking forward to seeing it finished. I, too, have a zillion scarves, but only one shawl like thing that I haven't worn yet. I made it out of a really cool confetti, ribbon like novelty yarn. It is very airy, and best for summer wear. I just never go anywhere fancy enough to wear it.

Pictures will be coming soon. I require technical assistance for this aspect of posting. I am such a computer dunce it is not even funny. I would have to go to special ed computer classes.

But I do plan to take some in process pictures as well as finished object pictures.

I actually stuffed the first one today. I love his cute little poochy belly. Still have to sew up the seam and add wings and feet. At the moment they are pinned in place.

Just did a quick search for eyeballs, and suprisingly I do not have any on hand other than the googly stick on kind. And he is far too sophisticated for that. Will have to make a trip to the fabric store tomorrow to procure proper eyeballs.
