It's Requiem for a Dream. Fantastic movie; if you haven't seen it then go out and rent[/buy] it as soon as you can. Basic storyline as far as the icon goes: An older woman creates an illusion that she's going to be a TV star and devotes her life to it, completely hidden from the fact that it's a lie.
