IC:
Character name: Cain Hargreaves
Fandom: Count Cain
Timeline: Right after volume four of Godchild.
Age: 17
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
He is just a normal human! He's rather good with a gun, knows how to use a sword, etc. but he's not HAX at it all. Again, just a normal human. A very intelligent one, though, if that counts as anything.
How would they use their abilities?:
However it benefits him. He won't go around shooting people, but if ever gets into a tight situation, he will defend himself. Also to be a dick.
Appearance:
Cain is a lean individual who is around the average height for a boy his age. His features can be seen as pretty feminine since whenever he crossdresses he makes a prettier girl than most girls do. He's on the paler side of the spectrum, and has green-gold eyes that brand him as INCEST DEVIL BOY OH SNAP. I mean what no this app is very serious and it will stay that way get out capslock. His back is covered with scars from being whipped.
He dresses pretty much in the way that aristocrats from his day did; very nice suits, occasionally frilly shirts, etc. He also often wears a black top hat and trench coat because he can.
Background:
There once was a man named Alexis Hargreaves. He was a nobleman who pretty much had it made-- he had wealth, power, and status. Really, the only thing he didn't have was the love of his sister Augusta. And by love I mean, love love not sibling love yes it's incest and get used to it because this series is incest all day every day. Understandably, Augusta doesn't return his feelings. But Alexis eventually forces himself on her, and later she gives birth to their son, Cain. She goes mad after the experience, and they send her away to a mental ward. The family, scared of a scandal, forces Alexis to marry another woman, and they pretend that she is Cain's mother. Alexis hates them both since they're the reason he can't be with his beloved Augusta. He plans on killing the two, and manages to poison his wife. She then goes crazy and tries to kill Cain with an axe, but she dies from the poison before she can get him. Alexis walks in on this, and he sees this as a great opportunity to be an asshole. He whips Cain, every night, to "purge him of his sins" because that is what good daddies do.
Cain was about five years old when that happened.
Seven years later, a medical student by the name of Riff joins the staff of the Hargreaves family. While wandering the grounds, he comes across a young boy who is burying a dead bird. Spoilers: It's Cain. He accidentally sees the scars on Cain's back, Alexis shows up and notices this, and then he makes Riff Cain's servant. Riff's first act of being a servant is to watch Alexis whip the little boy! Understandably, he is horrified. Later, Cain explains that Alexis does this because it's what good daddies do when they love their boys. Riff is not impressed. But he does end up staying because Cain needs him, and the two of them become very close.
After a while, Cain's health starts to deteriorate. He tells Riff about when he met his aunt Augusta, and how she completely flipped her shit when she saw him. Still, despite that he felt very familial with her, so he left the grounds without permission to go visit her. Again, she flipped her shit, except this time she ran through the window and fell to her death! However with her last breath she tells Cain that she's his mom. Cain, of course, is shaken over this! Except instead of crying like a bitch he investigated, and found out that his dad had been replacing the sugar that goes into Cain's tea with arsenic. Which was why he was getting really sick, and he finally realizes that good daddies do not do this shit at all. So with the truth out, Cain and Riff do what they do best-- be dicks. Alexis finally laces his tea with enough arsenic to kill him, Cain takes a sip, and is DEAD. Pleased, Alexis starts to smoke his pipe, except oh no, look, Cain isn't dead at all because he's clever. Even more, he poisoned Alexis' pipe! So Alexis curses Cain before jumping off the balcony and down a cliff. With his father presumably dead, Cain (around 12-13 now) obtains the title of earl.
Fast-forward a couple of years to where our story officially starts! Cain's dear cousin, Suzette, has recently died. He doesn't attend the funeral, the family is angry at him, except then her body goes missing! Rumors start up that she has risen from the dead, and is killing people. Cain soon reveals that she was never dead to begin with; she was in love with a man who the family did not approve of. Their plan was to reenact Romeo and Juliet: She would borrow one of Cain's poisons, feign death, and her lover would come get her. Understandably, Cain thought this plan was stupid and said no. Suzette, undeterred, simply steals the poison and goes on with the plan. Only there's a tiny problem-- the guy never planned on coming to save her. So Suzette, stuck in a coffin and heartbroken, breaks out on her own, and goes on a search to find the guy, killing anyone who gets in her way with the poison (Cain was planning on saving her the moment he found out, but she had already dug herself out by the time he got there). And then she finds him! At the altar, getting married to another woman. Cain watches as Suzette, poison on her lips, kisses the guy, and the two of them die together. It turns out that Suzette was the daughter of Augusta, so she was really Cain's half-sister and not his cousin.
He was also in love with her.
But Cain, along with Riff, continue on with life as best as they can. Death has a tendency to follow the young earl around, so he mainly gets involved with murder cases some way or other even if he doesn't mean to. So basically all the chapters that don't really have to do with the overall plot of the series are Cain getting in way over his head with murder and incest and such topics because this is a Kaori Yuki manga. And that's just how this mangaka rolls.
One day, a young fortune teller tells Cain that he is going to do a tango with death, and that there will be three victims surrounding him. Cain is just LOL and leaves, but a man runs up to him with a wallet that he dropped. Before he can hand Cain the wallet though, the guy dies a horrible bloody death. Apparently someone put a poisoned needle in it! Anyway he goes home, there is a police investigation, and the cop doesn't like Cain because Cain is a dick. It also turns out that the fortune teller, Maryweather, knew who was Cain was and wants revenge against him because she believes the Hargreaves family killed her mother. Later on, Cain visits Mary again, only to find out that her fortune telling business is a way for her friend to pickpocket customers. SO this makes them look very suspicious on the poisoning front, but Mary denies that the needle was their doing. She reveals what happened to her mother, and that her mother was killed by a poison that only the Hargreaves family possessed. The poison that was on the needle was the same one.
Anyway, Cain finds out that Mary's mother was a maid who worked in the Hargreaves house. Said maid was apparently Alexis' mistress, which made Mary his half-sister! And for once there is no incest involved here so you can let out a sigh of relief. But anyway, it turns out that Mary's mom killed herself in order to save her daughter, and through a series of events, Mary's friend ends up being killed. Cain promises him that he will always take care of her, the killer turned out to be ex of Mary mom and he ends up dying too. So that way, Mary's fortune of three deaths comes true, and Cain gains one little sister to join him!
Some time after, Cain is sick with a fever for a few days. When he finally comes to, he finds out that an old family doctor has come by to take care of him again. Cain gets an invitation to stay in the country, and Dr. Allen agrees that a peaceful atmosphere would be best for the earl's health. So they, along with Riff and Mary, all go to have a jolly good time in the country where nothing bad can happen! Anyway so the supposedly peaceful town is apparently being overrun with vampires. Cain is just LOL until he gets attacked by one. There's also a mysterious man there who tries grabbing him, Cain scratches his face and blacks out, and the next morning he's back in his bed. Of course the obvious conclusion to make is that it was all just a dream, but gasp Riff has a bandage on the very same spot! Coincidence? Anyway Cain is very intrigued by the vampire thing now, so he goes to visit the castle that's associated with it. There he meets Devon and Julianne, a pair of siblings who own the castle. However, Julianne looks suspiciously like the vampire who attacked Cain, only her entire demeanor was different. But she also had the same weaknesses of a vampire. Coincidence? Cain kisses Julianne, Devon is in a rage, and then he goes home on his merry way.
On the way home, Cain spots Riff burning Mary's hat in the forest. He rushes home, but Mary is fine and pretty jealous over where he had gone to. After Riff comes back, Cain announces that he will die if Riff ever betrayed him. The next day, Cain takes Mary to make friends with Julianne and they become friends (Julianne eventually invites them all to stay with them in the castle). Afterward, Dr. Allen sees Riff with the vampire and they are all buddy buddy with each other. Back at the house they were originally staying in, Cain takes a letter from Dr. Allen that appears to be a love letter to someone named Delilah. He teases the doctor for being a romantic, and none of this is important at all and won't show up later. Nope, no foreshadowing here. He tells Cain what he saw, and he obviously does not want to believe him. So Cain walks out just in time to catch Riff poisoning Mary's drink, Cain is like baaaawww, and Riff leaves. Mary chases after him, and he tells her that with Mary there, Cain no longer needs him. So Cain is depressed, he and Dr. Allen have another bonding moment, and the doctor compliments his eyes. This makes Cain snap because he hates his eyes, and he runs out.
Okay so now Cain, Mary, and Dr. Allen are all staying with Devon and Julianne. It turns out that Gedola, a vampire who was killed in the past, possesses Julianne at night! The townspeople are playing The Mob Song in their heads and are going to go to the castle! Devon is apparently in love with Julianne! She goes to Cain to tell him about the horrors of her brother wanting her, and Cain is just so someone loving you is bad? This manga is brought to you by: The Incest Foundation. Devon shows up, calls her a dirty whore, and reveals that she had sex with their dad on a regular basis, she then proceeded in sexing Devon, and he ended up setting their dad on fire. However, Julianne/Gedola's face gets fucked too, and the only way to bring it back to its former glory is to drink the blood of young girls!!! So they do that, the dad eventually dies, and here we are. Julianne runs off, and Devon angsts. That is, until Cain reveals that he was also in love with his sister and that his dad was also a giant asshole. And they then celebrate a new friendship that will obviously last a lifetime because happy endings exist. Really.
So Julianne finds the key to Gedola's tower, Mary runs into her, and the two of them go to explore! In a twist that nobody saw coming, there are dead bodies of girls everywhere, Julianne turns on Mary, and Cain and Devon are GASP THE TOWER! They, along with the rest of the townspeople who apparently take a god awful long time to get a mob going, all show up there. It turns out that there really is no Gedola at all, and that it's all really Julianne. She sets the tower on fire to burn them all, and they escape... But she reverts back to her nicer personality and starts to cry for help. Devon, unable to leave his sister, tells Cain that he'll see him in hell and burns with her. Later, Cain confronts the doctor and tells him that Dr. Allen's real body has recently been found. It turns out that this Dr. Allen is really a man named Jizabel who works for an organization named Delilah. This Jizabel also seems to know about Cain's past because he even has a whip and everything! Why? Because he is Alexis' foster child, that's why! The entire thing with Devon and Julianne was a scheme done by them because their dad (before he died) wanted Delilah to get revenge on them. So all the ~*~magic~*~ that occurred during all that was really achieved by science. He says that he hates Cain for ruining his life, and that even though killing him would be against Delilah's rules, he still wants to take the earl's eyes and put them in a jar. Before he can do anything else, Riff arrives, reveals that Cain had been suspicious of Jizabel from the start because Riff would never betray him. Jizabel fakes his own death, but not before saying one last thing.
Alexis is the head of Delilah, and is still alive.
Some time later, Cain's uncle Neil pays him a visit with some pretty bad news! Cain's odd lifestyle is giving the Hargreaves family a bad name, and in order to fix it Cain needs to get married. Cain is just LOL at first until his uncle threatens not to sign Mary's adoption papers. With his sister on the line, Cain agrees to marry a girl named Emeline, someone he knew when he was little. Although he was better friends with her older brother, Gilford. So he and Mary go to visit them, and it turns out that Emeline has a few admirers of her own: Oscar and Percy. Spoilers: Only one of them is going to be important in the long run. So while Cain argues with all of them, Mary finds Gilford! And he still has the personality of a ten year old because of a disorder. The family have been hiding him away for all the years, and only want Emeline to marry Cain to boost their own status because of this. They do, however, allow Mary to play with Gilford in case it helps him. That night, Cain is taken to a party with Emeline. There he meets a fortune teller named Melediana who gives him a pretty accurate fortune. Cain panics and pushes her away, and he then watches her leave... with Jizabel. Elsewhere, Jack the Ripper has just killed another victim and Gilford wandered in on the scene. Before the murderer can get to him, a maid comes and brings Gilford back home.
So Cain and Mary return home, and they bring Emeline along! As well as Oscar, but he wasn't actually invited. Notice how there is no Percy? Well, he fell in love with Melediana, followed her home, and was promptly killed by Jack the Ripper. Hurray! Anyway Cain walks in on uncle Neil talking to Riff-- specifically about how Riff's old house burnt down and he was the sole survivor, and how he had tried killing himself numerous times afterward. The police believe that he was responsible but they don't have enough proof for it. Uncle Neil was all HE CAN'T BE YOUR SERVANT OUR REPUTATIIOOOON and then Riff said that Cain was his reason for living. The uncle is touched by this and lets Riff stay, but he asks tsun tsun about it. So Cain and Riff have a cute bonding moment, which means that it is horribly interrupted. Later, they discuss Percy's disappearance, and Cain and Oscar decide to find Melediana to investigate. So they go to a party, Cain starts to believe that Oscar is Jack the Ripper, and then he runs into Melediana. They also have a cute moment, which means that it is horribly interrupted. By Jizabel. And he almost cuts out Cain's eyes, but Melediana stops him. So Oscar finds Cain unconscious, takes him back home, annnd drops a watch of his that has a picture in it! Emeline sees the picture, freaks out, and he freaks out when he finds out she saw it? COULD THIS BE IMPORTANT LATER? Naahhh.
Anyway Cain runs into Melediana again, and she says that only when she's with Cain can she feel emotions because apparently she is a Nobody. Har har I can't not make KH jokes. So they kiss, and then Emeline shows up and smacks the shit out of Melediana who then runs off. Cain and Emeline find out where Melediana lived, go and visit her and find out that, gasp, she's dead! At this point, Cain is pretty much obsessing about Melediana, and he calls Riff to go with him to dig up her grave! Elsewhere, Emeline confronts Oscar, and he admits that he only went after her because he wanted to get close to the Hargreaves family, and threatened her if she ever told anyone. She then sees Riff and Cain leaving and follows them, but she is attacked and killed by Jack the Ripper along the way. Oscar runs into Riff and Cain at the graveyard, and is shocked to find out that Melediana is in the coffin! Very confused, they all go back to Cain's house to find out that Emeline is missing. After they find her body, Cain admits to knowing that Emeline really did love him and that he treated her poorly because it seemed like a hassle to do otherwise. Oscar completely snaps and attacks him, Riff intervenes, and they all have a bonding moment. Cain then overhears his uncle telling Riff how much he loves Cain, and how he never wants Riff or Mary to leave him because Cain only smiles with them. This pretty much breaks Cain; he finally realizes that so many people loved him and he only took them for granted. He goes to pays his respects to Emeline's parents, but they're only interested in getting Mary to marry Gilford. Understandably, Cain is pissed off and leaves.
Our earl goes back to visit Melediana's mother, and finds out that she had a maid who looked kind of like her that disappeared around the time she died. Coincidence? He also found that that she had killed herself because of a man. Anyway, Mary goes off to play with Gilford, and Cain goes over to his place as well. But Gilford has already met Jizabel by then, and he's acting extremely strangely! Like talking about killing the people who hurt him, etc. and Mary is just OH MY GOD WHAT IS THIS. Cain suddenly remembers a memory that he has been blocking out about Gilford since it's pretty disturbing, then rushes to him. Gilford's father shows up, Cain hides, and the dad reveals that he knew all along that the servants abused Gilford. Later that night, the father is murdered. Mary goes to tell Gilford this, but he reveals that he wanted it to happen, and that the only one left to kill is Cain so that they can be together. Mary freaks out and runs off, of course. Meanwhile, Melediana escapes and goes to the tower where she jumped to her death (she was supposed to do a lovers suicide, but the guy went LOL JK so only she died). Cain and Riff show up because they were investigating, and Melediana reveals that Emeline died because of her; Jizabel rose her from the dead, and the only way for her to stay alive is to eat the entrails of women. Which explains why Jack the Ripper did what he did. She tells him that she can never see him again, and walks away. Cain stops Melediana, apologizing to Emeline, and confesses his love for her and don't cry Francy, don't cry, be a big girl and write this app without crying at this stupid manga.
So Cain and Riff leave Melediana at their place, and they go back to Gilford's since Mary is still there. It turns out that Gilford's maid had been feeding him drugs that made him childlike, but recently he hasn't been getting the drugged food so he reverted to his original self-- a giant asshole. Gilford reveals that it was the maid who killed his father, he gets into an argument with Mary, and Cain intervenes. Mary runs off, sprains her ankle, but Oscar is there to save the day... and reveals that he is the reason that his lover died. He and Mary go to visit her grave together. Also apparently Gilford was Melediana's old squeeze that didn't go through the suicide with her. Romance is hard. Cain goes back home and finds out that Mary is with Oscar, who, if you remember, he is suspicious about. So thinking that Mary might be with Jack the Ripper, he and Melediana go to place she was being kept at in order to save his sister. Once there, though, it turns out that Jack is really Melediana's mother! She tries to kill Cain, but Melediana leaps in the way and takes the hit instead. Jizabel says that he could save her only if Cain gives up his eyes, and Cain agrees. But before it can be done, Melediana stabs herself, declaring that she will never let Jizabel touch Cain. Jizabel then kills her, the place is set on fire to destroy all evidence, and then RIff shows up. Cain says that he will stay there and burn (Devon!) but Riff tells him that there are people who love him and are waiting for Cain, including himself, and that he would die without Cain.
Cain returns with Riff, and he then has a touching moment with uncle Neil. Oscar tells Cain about his old fiancee who died because of him, and he says that he wants to marry Mary because she reminds him of her. However, Riff sees the picture of the fiancee, and notices that she. Looks like Cain and not Mary. And things just got awkward so he decides to pretend that never happened. Afterward, Cain, Riff, and Mary all go out to the city together and because their timing is horrible, they run into a dying Gilford-- Melediana's mother found him and attacked him. Dying, Gilford reverted back to his ten year old persona, and Mary holds him while he dies. Cain, knowing exactly how she feels because of Melediana, comments that he wished he could still cry.
So various other incidents occur like a series of murders known as the White Rabbit case that Jizabel may or may not be involved with, and others. Then one day, Cain and Mary are hanging out in a park where they run into an aristocrat named Drew who is being teased because her looks are so-so. Mary won't stand for this shit, so she starts hanging out with her, and they overhear about a magic potion that is supposed to make you beautiful. So they go there, and it turns out that the guy in charge of it all is Jizabel (Mary only catches a very small glance of him though). Later on the potion seems to be working, and both Mary and Cain are at Drew's house. Jizabel suddenly appears, rips out Drew's eyes, and kidnaps Mary. Cain follows them, Riff catches up, and they have another little showdown. Jizabel finally admits that he was never going to kill Mary at all, and that he was simply checking up on his siblings with doing experiments. He departs with a final mention of Alexis, and Cain breaks down.
After that incident, Cain has been having frequent nightmares about the past. In order to get away from London, he accepts an invitation to go stay with relatives in the country. However when he and Mary arrive, it soon becomes apparent that he's not exactly welcomed there, and the one who invited him was his uncle's mother, who isn't mentally well. The reason why he's not welcomed? The family is holding a seance with a medium called Crehador; the uncle's daughter, Lukia, has been supposedly possessed by her mother's spirit. During the actual seance, Lukia's stepmother is killed, and Cain notices wires in the area of the ritual. He confronts Crehador, calling him a fake and a murderer, but then Crehador pretty much proves to him that he's the real thing. The stepmother was killed by a poison that she had bought herself to kill Lukia, who was now back to normal. Anyway it turns out that the real killer was Lukia's little brother, Emile, who did all of it because he loved Lukia too much to see her hurt. And by love I mean sibling love, not incest. He's about to kill himself when Cain stops him, and we are so close to an actual happy ending when none other than Alexis appears. He drives Emile to committing suicide, taunts Cain, then leaves. We also learn that Crehador had been working for him this entire time, although he's not an actual member of Delilah.
Uncle Neil confronts Cain about Alexis reappearing, but Cain basically just blows him off. Alexis, though, sent a warning message to uncle Neil and Cain doesn't realize it until later. When he gets there, Alexis reveals that uncle Neil was in love with Augusta as well, and that's the only reason that he cared for Cain. After Alexis escapes with one of his masked henchmen, uncle Neil tells Cain that while he did love Augusta, his love for Cain is completely pure and awwww family bonding. So they hug, and then uncle Neil gets an arrow lodged in his back, courtesy of a gypsy Cain had met earlier that day who was also the same masked henchmen. Or henchwoman. Whatever. After that, Cain finally realizes that he has to stop being idle about his father and Delilah, and swears to take them down by his own hands. After they run into another Delilah member who is trying to kill Oscar, and other fun shenanigans like that are had such as a blast from Riff's past showing up. Riff lets out (almost) all of his dirty laundry, and then they have a cute bonding moment, and for once no one actually dies in a chapter.
One night, Cain has a dream about his dear Suzette. She claims that her ring is missing and that their are feathers everywhere, and when Cain looks at her hand he notices that her ring finger is completely missing. But that was just a dream and has nothing to do with what is going to happen next. It turns out that it's the anniversary of Suzette's death, and Cain is the only one who remembers. He goes to visit her grave which looks like it was recently dug up, and there's a strange girl there. A guard dog tries to attack her, Cain jumps in the way and gets bitten instead, and the girl disappears after that. Later, when Cain goes home he finds that someone has kindly stuck the corpse of the same dog on his front door. He realizes that the girl was wearing a ring just like Suzette's, becomes insanely suspicious, and goes to the most sensible conclusion: It's grave digging time. So they dig her up, open the casket, and find that her finger is indeed missing, and that there are remains of some sort of ritual inside. Even more, the girl is back, and she looks exactly like Suzette did when she was younger. The girl, Mikaila, claims that she's everything that Suzette is, except that she actually loves Cain back. Understandably, Cain is a bit freaked out about it all. Even more, Jizabel is the cause of her creation. So Cain very harshly rejects Mikaila, she gets pissed off, and sics poisonous spiders on him. Riff is the one bitten, and Mikaila taunts that only she has the cure, and Cain would have to meet with her later for it.
Back at the Hargreaves manor, Riff's condition is pretty serious! So Cain goes to meet with Mikaila after having a giant freak out over the possibility of losing Riff. Once Riff finds out that he left, he goes after him while... still delirious and dying of poison. Don't worry, because Jizabel finds him! And actually gives him the "cure" for it. There is no particular reason for the quotation marks; this totally won't come back to bite them in the ass later. Anyway Cain really wasn't going to submit to Mikaila at all, and he ends up killing all of her little friends. She smashes the cure, Cain is like NOOOOOOOO, but then Riff appears! And then Jizabel comes and takes Mikaila away.
After all this mess, Cain finally tracks down Crehador and pays him for information. Crehador admits that Alexis is trying to recruit him but he's not interested, and then reveals some other details about Deliliah. But the main thing is that he tells Cain that a man that sounds like Jizabel has appeared in a household. So Cain goes there in a really great disguise that fools Jizabel for an impressive zero seconds. After a grand old time that includes wearing wigs and pinning to walls and drinking paint, Jizabel tells Cain that Alexis plans on causing another great fire of London before disappearing into the night. Annnd this is around the point that I will be taking Cain from, because if I take him from somewhere further along this app will be stained by my never ending tears.
You do not want to deal with that.
Personality:
Cain is one of those people with multiple layers to him, so what you see is most likely not what you get. He is, basically, an actor; he knows how to hide what he's really feeling, rarely letting people see him drop has facade. His past is something that haunts him constantly, and it's something that he definitely does not want the world to know. That's not to say it's impossible to chip away at his masks, though! You just gotta know what buttons to press, although even then he won't really give much away unless you already know certain things about him. For example, if you bring up daddy issues in general with him, while you might get a reaction out of him, it won't be anywhere near as great of one if you go oh btw I know that your dad beat you every night!
Also, even though he is mostly a private person, if he connects with you enough he won't mind sharing some horrific details of his past, especially if it's something he has in common with you. The only person he will ever tell the complete story to, though, is Riff. Because they're soul mates or something that is equally as shoujo sparkles inducing. Also, if he does end up caring about you deeply, he becomes pretty possessive which was explained in the background section. So if you do enter that circle of his, expect to be branded with a PROPERTY OF CAIN label.
So, what is Cain like when he's not drowning in a pool of angst and sheltering all he holds dear? He's a brat. He will speak whatever is on his mind, and he won't sugarcoat it to save your feelings from being hurt. If he thinks you're annoying, he will say so, and probably in a meaner way. He has a way with words so that he doesn't have to be vulgar or use childish insults to get under your skin; he'll let out a comment that, on the surface, seems to be innocent enough, but the person it's directed to will feel the ice burn that was just delivered oh snap. Although he will resort to being straight up rude without fancying it up if he's legitimately annoyed. Cain also has no problems with laughing at you in your face, and then constantly poking fun and teasing you. Although if it's playful teasing, that's more in line of his way of saying he likes you rather than being a dick.
He's frequently described as a lady's man; he's very charming, and he does like to flirt. He has no qualms at all about putting the moves on a willing (or unwilling) lady, although he won't actually. Do anything if the girl doesn't want it. He will still continue to flirt though. Although even though it may seem like he's chasing after a girl, a lot of the time there's an ulterior motive behind it, or he'll stop once it gets boring/the girl ends up annoying him. Also apparently when he has sex, he does it with the lights off and he always leaves before the girl wakes up so they won't see the scars on his back. Hurrah, trauma! And even though I've just been mentioning girls here, he has absolutely no problem whatsoever with flirting with guys. Although for the most part that always has an ulterior motive, whether it's just to fluster them or for something more serious.
Like stated earlier in the app, he's very intelligent, both book-wise and street. He's very quick on his feet, and has gotten out of a lot of sticky situations by his fast thinking. He has solved many murder cases this way, as well as somehow managing to stay alive when about a new person tries to kill him every week. He's observant, and is good at retaining facts and small details. He also has a hobby of collecting poisons, which has given him the title of that earl who is very popular and ravishing despite being really fucking weird.

Golly, Sandra! There is a FLAMING FERRET running around! Quick, if we catch it we can get rich quick. We will no longer have to STEAL, MOOCH, OR WORK to get money! Yippee!
1st person sample:
[ When the feed starts, it shows a rather young man looking intently into it. His facial expression shows a hint of confusion (this is technology way beyond his time) but it only lasts a moment. He relaxes, smiling at the camera. ]
Well, this wasn't what I was expecting when I woke up this morning. I'm actually rather used to the unexpected happening by now, but this really takes the cake. It takes the entire bakery. So, good job, you really took me by surprise.
[ The sarcasm is so heavy you'll have to be pretty dumb not to catch it. The smile is gone, and he looks pretty displeased. He continues without much of a pause: ]
I won't bother with the normal questions of where am I, how did I get here, where are my friends and family... It's really not that difficult to sift through the paperwork and Guide posts for information such as that-- the S.S. Thor, my world was destroyed, and no, they are not. I don't need any sympathy or words of encouragement, especially for the last one; they are simply late, and I'll scold them later for it.
I do, however, have one thing to ask.
[ And the smile is back, in full force. ]
Would anyone be so kind as to escort me to my room?

Cain had told Riff before that if he ever betrayed him, that he would go and die.
It was an odd thread, certainly; people would normally threaten to kill the other. But no, Cain pulling the trigger on his faithful servant would not cause Riff any harm beyond the physical. Yet if he pointed the gun at himself... Well, that was a different matter entirely. It was a way of life for the two of them. For years all they had was each other-- eventually they embraced more people into their circle. Cain cared for them all, deeply, truly, but his warning to Riff never changed.
Betray me, and I will go and die.
And so, as he filled in form after form of useless information, did Cain feel the sting of betrayal. From what he had gathered, the nobleman knew that the timing of one's arrival onto the Thor was completely random. It wasn't anyone's fault but the unpredictability of the Drive. Yet, here he was, completely agitated that he was the one who had to scrawl his own name down over and over and over again. This was a job for his useless and tardy butler, who probably would have had it all finished by now, while Cain would attempt to explain the situation to his little sister.
Which would probably be the oddest thing about this all, given that he never explains anything to the poor girl.
But neither of them were here. Nor were his uncle, or Oscar, or any of the other people he saw on a regular basis, whether he wanted to or not. He checked the listings repeatedly from the moment he knew of them. Cain knew that he had to be patient; a friendly alien (the people back home would be screaming in terror if they saw it) explained to him that it may be a matter of days, weeks, or even months for someone he knows to arrive. While Cain did have plenty of patience, this was something that was going to keep him up at night.
If there even was such a thing as night in space.
