GARY GARY GARY GARY :') Yep his nom kinda makes up for Tilda (but I`m still not over that!)

Please tell me why War Horse is nominated for BP? I mean seriously!

Okay I loved Moneyball! I mean it is a great movie and I think it deserves all the noms except for Jonah Hill. That I can't understand!

This is an incredibly PG-13 year for Best Picture. Only The Descendants is rated R. Man
oh really? Wow I didn't even note that! This usually never happens lol

ATLEAST BRIDESMAIDS DIDN'T GET A BP NOM *whew* lol

Looking forward to Oscar Simulation ;)

They still like Spielberg I guess. Granted, its reviews are somewhat on part with Munich and that also did surprisingly well with the Oscars even though it was ignored the rest of the season.

LOL. Jonah Hill was actually really good and nomination-worthy last year in Cyrus, so I'm a little miffed that he wasn't recognized for that but he gets a nomination for a decent performance in Moneyball.

Yeah, they usually love R-rated stuff but this year suddenly became all family friendly.

I FORGOT TO BE SAD FOR TILDA AND FASSY FOR A WHILE AFTER I SAW GARY'S NAME ON THE LIST OF NOMINEES. I mean, seriously, IT'S ABOUS FUCKING TIME. I seriously can't believe that this is only his first nomination. But now I get a little giddy thinking that from now on, he'll be known as, Oscar Nominee Gary Oldman *sigh ( ... )

GO GARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm still so excited about it.

Clearly the only explanation for the Fassy and Tilda snubs is the Academy hates Gingers. (lol and jessica only got nominated because she was a blonde in The Help).

LOL, I love that description of The Descendants. It really is a rash that won't go away. At least Shailenne didn't get a nomination but it's still getting way too much. George wasn't bad in it but if he wins, I will be so -__-

GARY OLDMAN NEEDS TO STEAL THAT OSCAR FROM GEORGE/BRAD NOW

I am REALLY happy Gary got a nomination. I haven't even seen TTSS yet but just on his body of work alone.

I really didn't care for many films nominated this year aside from The Artist and Midnight in Paris so I'm just cheering for The Artist and Gary for all of it.

He really is long overdue for this. But YAY! IT FINALLY HAPPENED.

I really need someone to beat George Clooney this year. I will cry tears of joy if Gary wins but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Ugh, I don't even hate Clooney himself but he doesn't deserve to win or even a nom imo.

And this would be his 2nd acting Oscar. Just no.

THE ONLY NOMINATION I'M HAPPY ABOUT. GARYYYYYYYYYYYY. ♥

(Other than that, I'm just disappointed all around. No Fassy or Tilda noms. And no Steve McQueen nom. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?)

Wait, Colin Firth's wife is on Twitter? How did I not know that. Lol.

I know!

Fassy and Tilda are major snubs. I never expected McQueen to even have a shot here cause he hasn't gotten any nominations anywhere else (even BAFTA) but Fassy and Tilda got almost everything..

I didn't know either until someone posted that tweet on tumblr. lol

What the hell is wrong with the Israeli film? =/. It's brilliant... and I'm not just saying that because I'm bias. I don't think it has a chance with an Iranian film and a Poland film about Nazi occupation in the running but "Footnote" really deserves some credit.

I am SO incredibly disappointed with the "Bridesmaids" nominations. Not only is it your run-of-the-mill romantic comedy, it was a BAD run-of-the-mill romantic comedy. Ugh. Sometimes I just lose faith in the Academy.

Very happy with the Kenneth Branagh recognition for "My Week with Marilyn". I don't know the actor but I was so very impressed by his performance in the film. Though, of course, Christopher Plummer would be a very deserving winner if he did take it.

What is so bad about "War Horse"? =\. I haven't seen it but am very excited to.

I've seen "Tree of Life" and wasn't too impressed, to be honest. The nature montage that took thirty minutes and the last ten God montage minutes took away from the film, IMO.

I've heard some not great things about Footnote, especially from Oscar bloggers. I just think it'd be incredibly controversial if it beat A Separation.

War Horse was just schmaltzy Oscar bait, that did something very safe and boring with the source material. I just didn't care for how desperate it seemed to get Oscars.

And yet it won an award at Cannes.
I don't think it'll win... but the nomination was definitely in place.
Besides, people are looking for controversial at award shows. Even if the Israeli film were so much more deserving than anything, as long as there's an Arab country that is not in great relations with Israel then it would be controversial.

You could use the same argument with every other film. A lot of the times actors take roles that they know might give them a chance at the Oscars. There's nothing wrong with that, IMO. I didn't watch the film yet but I don't think that striving for a good film that can be a strong Oscar-contender is a problem. Better that than making a film just for the boxoffice (which is often the case). Besides, films that try for the Oscars are much better quality than Boxoffice films. So I'll go with a film that tries to hard to be Oscar material any day.

The American reception hasn't really been out but I've heard quite a few bloggers say they didn't care for it at all though. But the foreign film category is pretty weird and it's not uncommon for the most acclaimed film to lose to something random.

Most of the other films (besides The Help and ELAIC) have the critical support to back up their awards contention and many are either unconventional Oscar films or were made with absolutely no expectation of awards. Honestly, do you think Michel Hazanavicius made The Artist because he thought it would win Oscars? He, Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo have worked together for years on films that have absolutely zero awards potential. War Horse, based on who the director is, the way it's filmed, the way it looks, the music, etc. just feels like they tried soooo hard to make an Oscar film, not necessarily to make the best movie. It would've actually been a good movie if they did something a little less schmaltzy with the material.
