I haven't seen Contagion yet and I'm not really interested to. But I do really want to see Ides of March. I've been reading relatively good but not amazing reviews of it but I still really want to see it. My general interest in politics will help, I think, as well as I know Farragut North and DC very well~ Plus awesome cast is awesome. I hope to see it sometime this week.
SO EXCITED FOR TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY. GARY OLDMAN FOR ALL THE AWARDS EVEN THOUGH WE HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET. I'm surprised at your additions of The Help and Midnight in Paris - I would love to see the latter get a nomination though. I can't wait to see War Horse - with the official trailer we just got, I'm super excited. No love for any of Michael Fassbender's films, you think? I really need to start versing myself for award season.
I don't usually like disaster/epidemic movies either (mostly because they're SO horribly inaccurate with science) but this one was actually realistic and yeah, the cast + Soderbergh = I'm there. Ides of March is solid but not a revelation. I think if you're used to watching Aaron Sorkin-esque politics since you're a West Wing fan too, I feel like Ides might be kind of stale in comparison. The acting is great though.
I don't think Fassy's movies this year are really going to play with Oscar voters. His buzziest performance is Shame, but that is said to be REALLY hard to watch and very very explicit. And ADM kind of failed to live up in its reviews. idk, I hope he gets in for something but I'm not holding my breath.
The Help and Midnight in Paris are really going to depend on how many nominees there are. They would obviously be in the 8-10 slots, but if they only nominate 6, then they're not making it.
Hmm. Yeah, it's always hard to live up to The West Wing but I think I would enjoy it nonetheless and good acting is also a definite plus. I mean, The Adjustment Bureau was a very average film I thought but the bits with Damon and politics were my favourite bits.
I'm getting very wary to see Shame but still so, so excited for it as well. I would love to see him get at least a nom.
What's going on with the amount of nominations for Best Picture?
Have you seen Hunger? Apparently, people have said that Shame might be even more difficult to watch... I feel like it'll be a really awkward movie to see in the theater too. lol.
We don't know how many nominees there will be until they're announced. All we know is that there will be more than 5, but less than 10. A film needs to reach a certain threshold of votes in order to be nominated, so it's not just like the top 10 films all making it. So if a movie is in 9th, but doesn't reach the threshold, then it's not nominated and there will only be 8 nominees.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is awesome. My flatmates said they found it a bit slow to begin, and I can understand that, but I didn't find that true. But the acting was great. THAT CAST. I love every single one of them.
My week with Marilyn looks so... it just looks off. I think it's Michelle Williams. I do think she is generally a fine actress but she just doesn't pull of Marilyn like you said.
I just don't see Michelle Williams as "sexy" at all. She's really pretty but in a very indie/girl-next-door way. There's just nothing about her that reads like an iconic sex symbol.
Some people have seen the movie already and said that she does a pretty good job, but just from the look of this trailer, I'm not into it..
Have you read the reviews for Albert Nobbs? They have been pretty terrible for the movie and Glenn Close's performance. In fact, of all the reviews I read for the movie, not one single person praised her performance. Instead all the praise has gone to Janet McTeer. She could very well get a nomination in the supporting category. I'm not saying that Close is out of the competition just yet, I did have her in my top five for best actress before the movie premiered. However, if she does get a nomination it will only be because she is Glenn Close and not because she was great in the movie. I guess the same can be said for Meryl Streep. The Academy just loves nominating Streep and I'm sure she'll be great in The Iron Lady, but will it really be one of the five best performances by an actress this year? We'll see. But just thinking about it is already pissing me off because Streep and Close will get nominated for who they are and two other actresses will get snubbed even when they gave better performances this year
( ... )
Close has gotten some pretty good reviews though, but the film hasn't. Almost every reaction I've read has said Close is great but the movie was blah. I think it just needs to do OK for Close to get nominated. If it completely tanks, then she's out. But obviously it's more about her name and career than the performance itself. It's the same reason Cate Blanchett got nominated for Golden Age..
Viola Davis seems like the frontrunner for nominations but I just don't see her winning unless everything else disappoints.
It's odd cause ADM seems like Cronenberg's most mainstream movie yet, but it just doesn't have a lot of passion in the reviews. I don't think Keira will go supporting, but even if she did, I'm still not sure about her chances.
Reviews are coming in now for My Week with Marilyn and it's pretty mixed. Some critics loved Michelle but others thought her performance was just a shallow imitation. The movie as a whole is not getting great reviews though and that will also hurt Michelle's chances.
Really? I swear all the reviews I've read for Close's performance have said she was dull and emotionless. Oh well.
I think Keira's best shot for a nod is going for supporting, but IA that her chances aren't great. Some loved her, others said she was giving an Oscar bait performance and she was laughable in some of the scenes when it wasn't meant to be funny.
Michelle is going to need a lot of support for a nomination.
I mean, they're not full-out raves but a lot of them do take not of Close, although it does feel more like they're paying respects to her entire career, as opposed to this one performance (oh well, what's new).
The marketing department for ADM has kind of established her as a lead though (especially with that poster). They can always backtrack but unless that movie does well, it won't even matter. I think Viggo has a better shot at this point.
With Clint Eastwood, it's either a hit or miss, and it's been misses for a long while now. But I feel that even if J. Edgar won't be received well, I think Leo will still get the nomination and possibly even Armie Hammer for supporting. I agree that he was the best part about the trailer. Maybe also Judi Dench for supporting actress
( ... )
Even Eastwood's "misses" tend to get some love, as long as the subject matter is in Academy territory. Other than Gran Torino, he's pretty much been showered with nominations. Changeling and Invictus both had mixed reviews and still ended up getting significant acting nominations. And yeah, I feel like Judi Dench will get nominated for something this year. I'm just not sure what
