This was something Link was uncomfortable watching for two reasons. The first, and the biggest, was that he felt like he was intruding. First upon something peaceful, and then upon one of those fears everyone carries in their hearts - a fear that, in this dream, Link knew that it wouldn't be something anyone could save another from. It made him want to turn his head away, to let this person remain with their private thoughts.

And the other reason...

He'd never known a family like he'd seen at first, and the pang of want in his heart for it was sharper than he wanted it to be.

He couldn't reach out for Med'an, so he stayed, hovering, between dream and reality. But eventually...

He did not take the ocarina from his tunic and put it to his lips. He did not even choose which song to play. One moment he was standing in the void, and the next he was playing the Song of Healing.

The song drifts through the air to his ears, sudden and different in quality from the rest of the dream. He's never heard it before, but it feels soothing - not enough to break the ache of being left, but lessening it.

The shadowed man they left is still. He does not play any instruments. Where, then, is it coming from?
