Title: Vermillion
Characters: Gold, Red
Summary: Gold grows up under the shadow of his older brother- Red. This is his journey.
Wordcount: 500
Disclaimer: I don't own Pokemon in any shape or form.
Notes: These drabbles were inspired by a fic I read where Red was Gold's brother, and I started wondering about what it would be like, growing up in Red's shadow...and this was the result. This will be a series of drabbles. Each drabble will be exactly 100 words, and there will be five drabbles per update.

Vermillion
Chapter One, Parts 01 - 05That morning, his mother fussed over him. She hovered around him, sneaking extra, unneeded things into his bag when she thought he wasn't looking. (Later, he would take those things out, leave them with Elm, but for now he will allow her this illusion of comfort.)

"Take care," she finally said, before he left. "You've never traveled by yourself before. Be safe." She didn't say, I'll miss you, or, please don't go, but he heard her all the same. He saw his brother's face flash before his eyes, and knew he could not do that.

"I will," he promised instead.

"Your first Pokemon- how exciting!"

Gold only half-listened to Elm as he chattered, outlining his choices for him and asking him about an egg he wanted Gold to pick up for him before he left. He absently nodded, his eyes only for the Pokemon themselves, their tiny forms staring up at him quietly, hopefully.

He looked over at Cyndaquil. The Pokemon snuffled at him curiously, and he closed his eyes. He could see his brother, champion of Kanto, his Charzard curled around him and roaring ferociously.

He walked out of that door a few moments later, Chikorita by his side.

It didn't take him long to reach Cherrygrove, and a part of him wondered why he never made the journey before, when he had been the only child in New Bark Town to make the trip to Kanto and back again even once.

Then he remembered how he had stared across the water once the trips had stopped. Like if he stayed there long enough, he could see the shores of Pallet from where he stood, as if he stared hard enough, he could see his brother on those same shores.

He shook his head, and looked down at his Pokemon. "Come on, Chikorita," he said. "Let's go get that egg."

"Ever seen a Pokemon egg before?" he asked, handing the said egg over to Gold, who shook his head. He had seen plenty of Pokemon in his lifetime, in both Johto and Kanto, but he couldn't recall ever seeing an egg.

The man looked thoughtful. "Out on a journey?" he asked.

"I just started one today," he replied, carefully putting the egg in his bag.

"You’ll see many new things from now on," said a voice from behind. “You’re very lucky.”

He turned, and anything he might have said died on his lips.

Oak smiled. "May I see your Pokedex?"

"What was Red like, when he first started out?" he asked, running his fingers over the smooth red of his brand new Pokedex.

Oak chuckled, sounding tired. "You don't know how many times I've been asked that."

It's different, he wanted to say. He's my brother, I have a right to know.

He didn't say any of this. He shouldn't have said anything at all. Instead, he smiled politely, putting his Pokedex in his pocket.

"Thanks for everything," he said, then walked out of that door, his Chikorita by his side and the egg a comfortable weight against his back.
