Seemed pretty damn intent on location, as if they didn't know - I'm wondering if Manhattan wasn't the only city affected by this.

Well, we don't really know anything about this world...just that it's some version of Manhattan with a giant monster or two running around. We don't know what's beyond the city or who's out there to contact.
