Chapter 1
Adam remembered the first time he saw David Bowie staring out at him from his father’s collection of albums. He was seven and it was summer; which meant he had three whole months to dress up however he liked without the kids at school making fun of him.
The cover was an array of colors with a blond haired figure sitting on a city stoop. With the short hair and bright blue outfit, Adam couldn’t tell if it was a male or female, but he knew that whoever the figure was, they called to him. Running out to the backyard, Adam’s cape flew behind him in his pursuit of his father. The weather was warm and the family had decided to have an outdoor picnic.
Finding him next to the grill, Adam tugged on his father’s shorts and showed him the record. “Daddy, this one.”
“You want to learn about the world of Ziggy Stardust?” Eber smiled down at his son. “An alien sent to show the world there was still hope.”
“Is it a boy or a girl alien?” Adam stared down at the cover wondering if the figure really was an alien. His father wouldn’t lie to him, but he thought aliens were only in make-believe. He had seen an alien in a late night movie once that both fascinated him and gave him nightmares.
“Well, Ziggy really didn’t care about those labels. Ziggy was all about love and music.” Eber spoke as he flipped over the burgers and then looked back down at his son. Adam stood transfixed tracing the figure with his finger. The light caught some of the fairy dust in Adam’s red hair from Adam's costume the day before and it made Eber pause. “You know, Ziggy has red hair like yours and likes to play dress up.”
“Really?” Adam smiled up enthusiastically and swirled his cape around. “Did Ziggy have a cape?”
“Ziggy did.” Eber nodded as he knelt down. Tapping the album, he laughed. ”Go get your mother and Neil; it’s ready.”
Hugging the record close, he ran off to find his mother and brother.

“Adam, hi. There is something that needs your attention,” Gwen, his assistant, stood in the doorway of the boy’s dressing room with a smile. “Follow me.”
“What is it now?” Adam smiled back getting up to follow her. Matt and Danny were left to laugh at something online. The rest of the boys were off doing interviews with some of the girls.
“Just someone needs to see you.”
“But you have that smile. I have learned that smile in the last couple of weeks. It means that something is up.” Adam smirked over to her as the pair made their way down the main hallway of the backstage area. “So tell me.”
“Did you know a Katy Allen?”
“What does she look like?” Adam smiled. He knew one from a couple of years before, but hadn’t kept in contact with her since their brief play run.
“I don’t know.”
“Isn’t she here?” Adam laughed. Old friends had been surprising him at different stops and he found, for the most part, he enjoyed reconnecting with them.
”No, her family is here.” Gwen paused at one of the many doors in the hallway. “She died last week.”
“What?” Adam shifted to look at the sheet. On it was Katy’s name and the names of the visitors: Kim Allen and Kris Allen.
“There are waiting for you inside here. Take all the time you need until rehearsal.” Knocking on the door, the assistant opened it and let Adam walk through before letting it close.
An older woman sat waiting with a small boy on her lap. The brown haired boy’s feet kicked out in an easy rhythm as he held an envelope tightly in his hands.
“Hi.” Adam smiled over to them as he walked closer. The woman, who he assumed was Kim, looked like an older version of the woman he once knew. Both had Katy’s light blond hair and sad smile.
“Hello.” Picking the boy up, she whispered in his ear and gave him a little push forward. “Kris has something for you that might help explain why we are here.”
“Momma said you were nice. Are you nice?” The boy didn’t have her hair color, but Adam noticed he had the same rich brown eyes. Holding out a large yellow envelope, the boy continued without the answer to his question. “Momma said to give you this.”
Smiling, Adam knelt down on one knee and took the envelope from the Kris’s hands. “Thank you. And I think people would say I’m nice.”
“Good.” The boy smiled back showing his missing front tooth.
Among the contents, Adam found a letter and a picture of Katy with her arm around his back. The picture was taken a couple of years ago on their opening night. In the background was the set from the play. Seeing her face again brought back old memories of long night conversations and one short night of comfort.
“Is it true?” Kim Allen stood walking to stand behind the small boy.
“Your daughter was the sweetest person. She walked in a room and it just lit up with her energy. Everyone loved her.” Adam’s attention went back to Kris and then back up. “Does he know?”
“Katy talked about you a lot. She wanted him to know his father but she didn’t know how you would react.” Kim let the tears come to her eyes as she fought to continue with short breaths. “She wanted to contact you when she saw you on TV, but she was too weak by that time.”
“Momma has a bad sickness.” Kris looked down at his old sneakers. “She told me she had to go sing with the angels but she would still watch over me.”
“Your Momma is going to make those other angels jealous with her voice.” Adam waited for the boy to look up before smiling again. “She always amazed me with that voice.”
“Are you really my Daddy?” Kris’s big eyes started to tear up. “Momma said you'd like me.”
“Yeah. I’m really your Daddy.”
Kris rushed over to him and threw his little arms around his neck. Adam was a little startled, but soon wrapped his arms around the boy’s back. Rubbing Kris’s back, he felt his hands shake.
“I, he needs someone to watch over him. I need some time. Katy was sick for a long time and I don’t have much money.” Kim pulled at the tissue in her hands. “I can’t keep him.”
Adam found that Kris was not going to release his tight grip so he stood up lifting the boy with him. Taking a deep breath, he was left speechless. The tour wasn’t the best place for a child. The other Idol’s children only came for visits and with other family members to watch over them.
“I can’t. And you are his father.” Kim’s voice broke as she wiped away some more tears. “I know what this looks like. I don’t want any money; I just want the best life for him.”
“I understand.” Continuing to rub Kris’s back, Adam gave her a weak smile. “I just don’t know what I can do with him right now. We just began the tour…”
“I can’t take care of him. I would if I could, but Katy…” Kissing Kris on the back of his head, she made her way out the door. “All the information is in that envelope. Call me about how he is doing.”
“Grandma is sad.” Kris pulled back and looked at his father’s eyes. “You wear makeup like Momma.”
“Yeah. Probably more than Momma, huh?” Adam gave out a small laugh and was happy to see it earned him a giggle in return. “Hey, let’s go find my friend Lil.”
“Lil sings loud like you.” Kris giggled again in his father’s arms. Walking into the girl’s dressing room, all eyes turned to look at him.
“Heya, Adam, where did you find this cutie?” Lil broke the silence in the room from her spot next to Allison on the couch reading reviews.
“He is my Daddy. I’m four.” Kris smiled to the group of girls as he wiggled to get down. Once his feet were on the ground, he ran over to Allison. “You have pretty hair.”
“Thank you, munchkin.” Allison patted his hair and let out a deep laugh as Kris ran back to wrap his arms around Adam’s leg.
“So…” Lil’s smile increased. “Forgot to tell us something, Daddy?”
“This is Kris. Apparently, he is four-years-old and likes rainbow colors. Go figure.” Adam laughed. “And looks like he is the newest member to join the tour.”
“Munchkin, want to go see my guitar? I’ll show you how to make some cool sounds.” Allison jumped up from the couch and bounced over to take the boy’s hand.
Kris looked up to Adam and then took her hand once his father nodded him on. Adam mouthed, ‘thank you’ to Allison as she took his son to the other side of the room.
“Sit.” Lil patted the spot next to her. “Please tell me you know what you are doing.”
Shaking his head, Adam stretched out his legs and folded his arms around his chest. “I slept with a girl once. Once.”
“Honey, it only takes one time.” Lil laid her head on Adam’s shoulder. “You obviously didn’t know about this?”
Laying his head on Lil’s, Adam lowered his voice. “His mother died. His grandmother said she couldn’t take care of him.”
“Well, the Lord works in mysterious ways.” Sitting up, Lil hugged Adam and then pushed him back playfully. “Go call your Momma.”
“Oh, fuck, my parents!” Adam threw his head back to rest against the back of the couch. “And worse, Neil.”
“It won’t be that bad.”
“You don’t understand my brother then.”
Kris continued to play with Allison while Adam made his phone calls. His mother was the most vocal about the news. Adam was pretty sure she dropped the phone when the word ‘son’ came from his mouth. She was arranging her schedule to come out as soon as she could. His dad started to tell him he was too trusting and people were looking to take advantage of his good nature. Adam cut him off by saying he knew Kris was his the moment he saw him. The conversation with Neil could wait until he could think of enough witty comebacks to the million things he knew his brother was going to call him out on.
Kris met the rest of the Idols while they rehearsed for the nights show. Kris sat in the audience with Allison and his dad watching the others perform. When it was Adam's turn, Kris followed him on stage and tried to mimic his father's moves much to the amusement of the rest of the crew.
Later, Kris watched on, as everyone got ready for the stage. Sitting on Adam's makeup counter, he asked question after question about Adam's makeup routine. When he saw Adam's coat, he started laughing and called it a blue dinosaur.
Gwen stood with Kris at the side of the stage as he watched his father perform that night. On Kris’s head were large headphones to block out most of the sound but he still jumped as the lights started flashing. Twisting his hips, Kris laughed as he tried again to mimic his father. Soon he was in his own little world dancing and twirling around Gwen. By the end of the set, his movements were slowing down and his eyes started to close as he swayed back and forth.
“Hey, little man, let’s go back to the dressing room and lie down.” Adam wiped some of the sweat from his brow as he walked over to the side of the stage. Giving Gwen a smile, he picked Kris up and felt his heart swell as Kris rested his head on his shoulder.
“Why don’t I bring him to the hotel? I’ll check him in and it will keep the press from getting a hold of this.” Kris had won over Gwen’s heart and she didn’t want Adam to have to face a million cameras with the sleeping boy in his arms.
“Are you sure? This isn’t in your job description.” Putting on his jacket for the last number, he looked over sheepishly.
“The boy is asleep. How much work could that be?” Gwen smiled. “And my job is to make your job run smoothly. You already have reporters digging into your stuff.”
“Thank you.” Adam kissed Kris’s forehead and ran out to join the others.
***************
Adam woke up to something poking his face. Brushing it away, he heard a giggle. Opening his eyes, he saw Kris staring back at him on the pillow. One of his fingers was poking at his cheek.
“What’s so funny?” Adam asked with a large smile on his face. The boy really was precious.
“You don’t look like a cartoon anymore.” Kris giggled again and moved closer. Poking his cheek again, he asked, “What’s this?”
“What is what?” Adam asked confused.
“The little dots.”
“Oh. Those are freckles.” Smiling, Adam saw the new information being processed by his son. “I have them speckled all over my skin because the sun gave them to me.”
“Like glitter?” Kris scrunched up his nose.
Laughing into the pillow, Adam remembered the conversation they had last night while Adam was getting ready to go on stage. The boy didn’t understand why the light was making his dad’s skin sparkle.
“Yeah, kind of like glitter that doesn't come off.” Adam smiled and stretched. “So what do four-year-olds eat for breakfast?”
“Ice cream.” Kris sat up and pounced on top of Adam’s chest. “With bacon.”
“Ice cream and bacon?” Tickling Kris’s sides, he watched as Kris was reduced to a loud laugh. After a couple of minutes, Adam stopped and Kris fell down to rest against his chest out of breath.
“Maybe we can get room service to bring us ice cream and bacon for breakfast just this once.” Brushing down the hair on Kris’s head, he let the moment sink in. He was a father and this little boy was now his responsibility.
“Are you going to go sing with the angels like Momma?” Kris popped his head up from Adam’s chest. The playful boy from the last couple of moments was gone.
“Hopefully not for a long, long time little man.” Adam sat up and reached for the phone. “You sure about this bacon with ice cream?”
Bouncing on the bed, Kris nodded his head ‘yes.’
“Okay, but it will be our secret. You can’t tell Lil. Or Megan.” Dialing the number for room service, Adam added, “Or Danny.”
“Our secret.” Flopping down on the bed, Kris smiled up at the hotel ceiling.
