Chapter Three

"Damn it Adam, go talk to him before I do." Danielle walked up and shoved Adam from behind into the direction he had been staring at for the last fifteen minutes.

"Danielle, stop it." Adam turned back and fixed his shirt. "It is not going to happen. I just like looking."

"I know that you want more than just a look. Go and talk with him. Trust me, it’s what normal people do to get to know one another." Danielle turned serious as she looked up into Adam's eyes. "He won't think you are hitting on him if you just say 'hello.'"

"I don't want to hit on him! I don't want anything from him so stop it." Adam walked back to his locker and put in his combination. After the third try of failing to open it, he stopped and decided he wasn't going to do his homework anyway. So what was the point of bringing home the books?

Turning back to the direction of where Patrick was standing with his large group of friends, Adam took his time looking the senior over. Adam had been drawn to the brown-haired, brown-eyed boy since the beginning of his freshman year, two years ago. Patrick was popular and outgoing and always looked like he fit in. He was the shortest boy in his senior class, but you would never know it seeing him walking down the hallways. He walked like he was seven foot tall.

Patrick was everything that Adam wanted to be. Patrick was everything that Adam found he wanted, period.

Walking down the hallways, no one stopped to watch him. While his middle school years were spent listening to whispers and feeling the stares, high school was spent being invisible. Adam couldn't decide which one he preferred.

The universe must have been inline for Adam while Kris was adjusting to his new living arrangements. For the first couple of days, the tour dates allowed the performers to stay in hotels overnight. Now, the real touring was beginning and the Idols had to sleep on the bus while it drove to the next venue. The cramped quarters of the guys’ bus made for an interesting living situation with the addition of a four-year-old. With Leila joining the girls’ bus, the best place for Kris was to follow her but he was still not allowing Adam to leave his sight. Adam had to use every ounce of his charm on the tour directors to allow him to stay on the girls’ bus. The guys gave him a hard time for converting over, but it was what was best for Kris.

“Grandma, I like you.” Kris’s smile beamed up as he hugged his grandmother’s legs. “You are different than Granny.”

“Your daddy told me about her.” Leila returned the smile and then looked over to where Adam was asleep on the bus couch. “Do you want to talk with her?”

“I miss Granny. She bakes pies!” Kris followed Leila over as she sat down and jumped on her lap. “Yummy pies.”

“Oh really? Well, she sounds amazing.”

“Daddy likes pies? Granny will make one for him.” Kris wiggled down and started to run to wake up his father. “Daddy!”

“Kris, wait.” Leila called over. “Daddy is tired; he needs to sleep a little bit more.”

Despite her warning, Kris continued to run the short distance to where his father lay and whispered into his ear. “Daddy, pies!”

Not getting a response from his father, Kris became frantic and started shaking him. “Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!”

“Hey, Kris. Stop.” Adam woke up suddenly and took Kris’s hands in his own. “Calm down.”

“Daddy didn’t wake up!” Kris cried out as Adam sat up and took Kris into his arms. Rocking the boy back and forth, he looked over to his mother in confusion.

“What is going on?”

“He asked if you liked pies and then went to wake you up.” Leila moved to sit near her son. “When was the last time he talked with his grandmother?”

“When she dropped him off. She gave me a stack of papers that had her number on it, but I don’t know where they ended up.” Continuing to rock the boy, Kris’s cries subsided and he fell asleep.

“Adam, he needs to talk with someone.” Brushing the boy’s hair out of his face, Leila gave her son a sad smile. “I asked him if he wanted to go outside with Ryder while you slept and he refused saying he was waiting for you. He won’t leave your side and he just freaked out over you not waking up.”

“I know. I was hoping it would pass, but I think it is getting worse.” Hugging the boy close, Adam closed his eyes. “Did you hear him last night?”

“Yeah, I think the whole bus heard him but we were giving you some privacy.”

“He told me before that his mother sings to him in his sleep but she hasn’t been lately. Last night she came to him, but she was pale and didn’t speak.” Adam looked over towards his mother. “He woke himself up with his screams and wet the bed.”

“Didn’t you say something about a child psychologist that you were speaking to? Maybe it is time to set up a meeting.”

“I see if Gwen can schedule something with him. He has to be able to come to us though, I’m booked solid until the end of this year.” Noticing that Kris’s even breaths were mixed with short intakes of breath, he started rubbing his back. “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing mom. I’m scared.”

“You are doing everything you need to do. You are the constant in his life now and he needs that more than anything.” Kissing his son’s cheek, she continued, “Just remember, parenting is a series of guesswork and trial and error. No one knows what the hell they are doing.”

Heard you had a love child that proves you are a fake queen for publicity. Oh, the stories I could share to disprove that rumor…Better call me before Star offers me a number I cannot refuse. I have so many pictures just collecting dust and it would be nice to finally get that dungeon built…Seriously, call me. I miss hearing you drone on. xoxo

“Kris, come here.” Adam called him over from playing with his toys in the corner. Adam had the day off to record and luckily the producer was a father himself so had no problem with Kris tagging along. Kris even got to sing into the microphone while they were testing the equipment. “Smile into my phone.”

“Why?” Kris stuck his chin out and crinkled his eyes as he smiled big for the picture.

“I’m sending your picture to my friend.” Adam helped Kris jumped into his lap to look at his picture on the screen.

Laughing at the shot, Adam replied back with the picture and the words, “This is what I have to say to the rumors.”

“To Ally-son?” Looking up at his father, Kris gave a big smile.

“No, an old friend that you haven’t met.”

“Oh.” Kris slid down and bounced back over to his toys as Adam’s phone chimed with another message.

OMFG, he is ADORABLE!

Come see him. Tell me what city and I’ll get you a ticket… or more if you want to bring someone.

I just need one. ; )  Let me look over my schedule and get back to you on the date. I need a vacation.

Cannot wait. : )  I miss hearing you drone on too.

“Adam.” Leila stood smiling over her son. “Honey, you are smiling at a phone.”

“Brad is going to come out to see a show. He wants to meet Kris.” The smile grew on his face as he spoke.

“Is that a good idea?” Sitting down, she rested her hand on his knee. “You know I love Brad, but…”

“Mom, don’t. It isn’t like that. We are still friends and he wants to see him.” Putting his phone in his pocket, he stood up. “That is all.”

“Adam, I know that you are not over him.” Following him up, she wrapped an arm around his waist.

“I don’t think I will ever truly get over him but it isn’t that. He wants to see Kris and the show.” Resting his arm around her shoulder, Adam kissed the top of her head. “Kris is going to love him.”

“Kris is meeting with the doctor tomorrow, right?”

“Yeah, man cleared his schedule and is flying out tonight.” Adam smirked over. “Apparently, I’m a big name now and can get people whenever I want.”

“Yeah, well, don’t let it go to your head. It was big enough before you started this.” Leila swatted at her son’s arm.

“Hitting isn’t nice.” Kris sat watching his grandmother and father interact.

“That’s right, mom. Hitting isn’t nice.”

“Kris, I wasn’t hitting him. I was just teasing him.” Realizing she made another mistake, Leila smiled over to Adam. “Help me out here.”

“Grandma was just playing around. She didn’t want to hurt me; she was just teasing me in a nice way because I was being silly.” Adam scooped Kris up. “Hitting isn’t nice when it is meant to hurt, you are right.”

“Say ‘sorry.’” Kris leaned his head down on Adam’s shoulder as he spoke to his grandmother.

“Adam, honey, I’m sorry.” Leila smiled and rubbed Kris’s back. “Am I forgiven?”

Kris nodded his head ‘yes’ and then smiled.

***********

How about next Thursday? I’ll take a long weekend.

Adam read his messages late the next night on the bus. Kris was asleep next to him and the only sound was the rhythm of tires on the road.

Perfect. I need someone to talk to that isn’t my mother. I love her, but she is so biased. Kris isn’t doing so well.

What’s going on?

He met with a psychologist today. He keeps having these panic attacks whenever he thinks I’m leaving him. He has been having nightmares about his mother too. I don’t know what I’m doing.

I know you didn’t plan on this, but I also know that you are a great father. I think you would agree that I know you better than anyone else. You can do this. Sounds like he just needs you to be there for him. Poor guy lost everything he knew and then was catapulted into the wild whirlwind of Adam Lambert.

I miss you… Adam started to write and then deleted it. Pausing, he looked down at Kris. He didn’t realize how much Kris would change everything in his life. Kris came along when he thought he knew exactly what he wanted in life, but now, he was lost.

Everything has changed. Everything. I want this so bad; I don’t have to tell you that, but is this right for Kris? Am I being selfish to think I can have this career and it won’t affect him?

Adam, you are anything but selfish. You are showing him that you can live your dreams through hard work and dedication. He will resent you later when he is twenty and thinks you stopped your life for his

I miss you, but I probably shouldn’t say that. I stopped myself so many times from saying it before. But, it is true.

I miss you too. : ) I’m working on my album and I kept remembering how nice it was to have you as my soundboard. You told me the truth, even if I didn’t want to hear it. I NEED that in my life, you know I like to pick my friends based on how much they can kiss my ass

I know a lot about kissing your ass, yes. ; )

Not what I meant, but yes…I miss that too. You getting any now that you are a rock star adored by millions

Drake ran. He sent me a text the other day apologizing again, he wants to stay friends but Kris freaked him out. It was too much responsibility to date someone with a kid. So no, the rock star status has done nothing but hurt my sex life

Ah, baby. Tell Cheeks where it hurts ; )

Shut up. : ) God, you need to come here now. Everyone is going to hate me because I keep adding people onto the tour. Megan and Lil are great, but I know they look at me sometimes with jealousy that Kris is here. I can’t help it and they know that, but it must be hard for them to see Kris all the time and miss their own children

See, this is why you are a great father; you worry about everyone else but yourself. Maybe I do need to become your groupie and follow you around the country, if only so I can make sure you aren’t being such a nice guy all the time

I have to go, Kris is mumbling in his sleep again. I’ll talk to you later

K, xoxo

“Adam, much has been made of the fact that there is an eleventh member on this American Idol Tour, how has it changed the dynamics of the group?” The interviewer gave her camera smile as he asked Adam a question she knew wasn’t allowed.

“My son is a private matter that I am not going to discuss. Nice try, but sorry. Next question.” Adam returned the smile.

“I know you don’t want to comment on Kris, but…”

“Wait, how do you know his name?” Adam cut off the interviewer and looked up at the camerawoman. “Turn it off.”

“I asked Danny about it earlier and he revealed his name.” The woman kept her smile but Adam could tell she was getting nervous.

“Do you have children?” Adam asked looking her in the eye.

“No, but my sister has kids.”

“Imagine that your sister died and you were left in charge of your nieces or nephews while they grieved for their mother. Imagine how scared those children would be and how much you would do anything to protect them from having to feel any more pain. Then, I want you to think about editing that piece with Danny.” Adam looked back to the camera. “Let’s continue.”

Shaking her head, the interviewer looked down at her questions and her finger shook as she tried to find another question. After composing herself, the fake smile returned and she continued on with the standard questions of the tour and the album. When the Idol’s interviews were posted, Danny’s was mysteriously missing.

Waiting until Kris was taking his nap, Adam asked his mother to watch him while he went to take care of something.

Finding Danny with other guys, he called him over.

“I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and rack it up to the fact that your brain cannot control your mouth, but when the fuck did it become a good idea to talk about Kris to the press?” Adam sat calmly across from Danny in a private room.

“Did I?” Danny laughed nervously. “She asked about what it was like to have children on the tour and I just didn’t realize I said his name.”

“Not good enough, Danny.” Adam sat forward and fixated his eyes on the man across from him. “Do it again and I will make you wish you never met me.”

“Truly, Adam, I’m sorry. It will never, ever, happen again. I swear on the Bible.” Danny started to turn red as he spoke and fidgeted around in his seat. “I’m sorry.”

“Apology accepted.” Adam sat back. “He means more than the world to me Danny. I won’t let anyone fuck with his chances of having somewhat of a normal life. He didn’t choose this and he really doesn’t need this right now. He hasn’t been doing so well at night and I don’t want this to become a story.”

“I didn’t know. Really Adam, I’m an idiot. I didn’t think and…”

“I know. I’m sorry if I came on too strong.” Adam ran his hands down his thighs. “I’m just freaking out a little bit but whatever. Let’s get back before they think I converted you.”

“Do you think they would think that?” Danny asked as he stood and started towards the door.

“Joking, Danny. Joking.” Adam laughed. “Everyone knows that only thing you have up your ass is that stick.”

“What?” Danny’s eyes got big as he stopped and turned around.

“And now we are even.” Adam smirked. "Well, almost."

“Adam, security says your visitor is here. Want them to send him back?” Gwen called out into the men’s dressing room. Rehearsals had just ended and everyone was getting ready for the show. Kris was watching a Disney movie with Matt but looked up when his father’s name was called.

“Yes. Thank you Gwen.” Adam smiled and bounced up heading towards the door. Holding out his hand behind him blindly, he felt Kris take it.

“Daddy, what's a visitor?”

“A friend. That old friend we sent your picture to.” Adam stopped them at the end of the hallway and picked Kris up. “He wanted to meet you.”

“Is he nice?” Kris asked as he played with the hair on the back of his father’s neck.

“Yes, he is nice and silly. I think you will like him.” Adam winced as Kris yanked a hair. “Ouch.”

“Sorry, Daddy.” Kris petted the spot.

“It’s okay.” Adam gave him a smile and then heard the shout as Brad turned down their hallway.

“OH MY GOD!!!! ADAM LAMBERT IS IN MY PRESENCE! HE IS REAL!”

“Brad, discretion was never your strong suit.” Adam smirked as he leaned down and gave him a quick kiss on the corner of his mouth.

“Neither was it was yours until this munchkin.” Brad smiled up at Kris. “He looks more like my love child than yours.”

“Ally-son calls me munchkin.” Kris smiled down but held onto Adam tighter. “Do you like Ally-son?”

“Girl has a rainbow for hair.” Brad continued to smile. “I love her.”

“Do you like Cinderbella?” Kris asked.

“Cinderella?  She is my favorite.”

“You can watch it with me. Matt does the funny voices. Daddy has to put on makeup.” Kris wiggled around to get down. As his feet hit the floor, he held out his hand for Brad’s. “Want to watch my movie?”

“Sure.” Brad took his hand and smiled at Adam. Mouthing the words, he said. “I LOVE him.”

Kris grabbed onto Adam’s hand and pulled them both back to the room. “Come on, we will miss the best part.”

Later as Kris watched his father’s set from side stage, he whispered into his grandmother’s ear, ‘Daddy kissed Brad.’ Leila looked over to Brad standing next to them and saw the telling look on his face.

Adam introduced his parents to Brad three months after they started dating. Adam told his mother that he finally found someone that ‘got him’ and he was falling for him fast. The minute Leila met Brad she knew the feelings were mutual. Both had a way of looking at one another that told the world they were taken.

After their breakup, she was worried about her son. He changed, become more guarded around others. After a few long months, he come to her and said he was trying out for American Idol. He said it was the next step for him and he needed something to focus his attention onto. Throughout the process, she saw her son had grown even more into the performer he was meant to be but there was always this certain sadness about his performances. A sadness that proved to her that her son was still very much in love and longing for the day their paths would cross again.

Looking at Brad watching her son on stage, she was taken back to the day she first met him and once again knew the feelings were mutual.
