Pancakes

“Daddy.” Kris bounced into his father’s bedroom. The sun creeping in through the window had woken him up and he needed to ask his father a question before he forgot. “Daddy!”

“Kris. Early. Not awake. Shh…” Adam mumbled into his pillow as he pulled his blanket over his head. Since they had been in their new house, Kris seemed to have an internal alarm clock that woke him up every day at 7 am. Adam’s bed time and Kris’s wake time were not coordinating. Speaking through his blanket, Adam tried to send Kris off to wake up his grandmother.

“Grandma said she needs beauty sleep more than you.” Pulling on the blanket to help himself up onto his father’s tall bed, Kris pulled the blanket off his father’s head. “Wake time, Daddy.”

Raising his head with only one eye open, Adam smiled at his son’s energy. “Okay, you win. Wake time.”

“When are we going back on the bus?” Kris smiled back as his father attempted to tame his hair; no matter how many times he ran his hands through it, it continued to stand up. “Daddy needs to see A-breeze.”

“Probably a good idea.” Sitting up, Adam threw his legs out over the edge of the bed and yawned. “We don’t go back on a bus for awhile. We will be taking some airplane trips soon but we get to stay home for a little bit while my album is promoted.”

“Matt and Ally-son coming with us?” Kris followed his father as he walked around the room gathering clothes. “I miss them. And Anoop. And Sarver. And Alexis. And Lil. Will Ryder come too?”

“No, everyone gets to do their own thing now. When we go back on the bus, it will just be you and me. And Grandma.” Looking down, Adam saw a wide range of emotions run across his son’s face. Kris could never hide anything; every thought was written on his face. “Remember, we said good-bye after the Idol Tour ended.”

“No Ally-son?” Kris pouted and looked like his little world was just crushed.

“No Ally-son.” Adam stuck out his own lip. “She will go on her own bus and sing for different people.”

“Well, that is just unacceptable.” Kris continued to pout as he put his hands on his hips. “We must fix this.”

Once he contained his laughter, Adam shooed Kris out of the room and told him to go get dressed.

Shaking his head as he turned on the shower, Adam started laughing again. Brad was having such a great influence on his son.

Stepping under the warm water, Adam closed his eyes and hummed. Brad had dinner with them four nights this week and counting. After they cleared their plates, they went out into the large backyard and chased Kris around until he wore himself out enough to sleep.

After Kris was tucked away, Adam and Brad would share a drink and talk. Their relationship was slowly growing but both felt it was important to take it slow. Brad had yet to spend the night

While it was nice to have no expectations, every night Brad went home with a just kiss, it was harder and harder to let him go.

“Daddy!” Kris shouted from the other side of the door shaking Adam out of his thoughts. “I’m hun-ger-y.”

“Just a minute.” Adam called back. Turning off the water, Adam made a decision: tonight he was going to ask Brad to stay. Smiling as he reached for a towel, he twirled wrapping the warm cloth around him.

“I want pancakes!” Kris shouted.
