Sorry I've been rather absent lately - I've been reading, but I haven't had anything to say!
But now: I've been to see Tron. Not worth the $15 for the 3D, but pretty awesome nonetheless. Would've been much better if I'd only had a rudimentary understanding of English, though.
Between this and Country Strong, I think people want us to think this kid Garrett Hedlund is the next Chris Pine. You know: super cute, charming enough that fans swoon, capable of helming a sci-fi franchise AND playing straight roles. He's not. He doesn't have half the charisma. He's not quite a Sam Worthington, though: he's got a bit more intelligence in his face (which isn't to say Sam Worthington is dumb; I have no idea. It's just that his FACE is dumb. Gormless, even).
Olivia Wilde was pretty cute in this, though: bizarrely, the first thing where I've legitimately liked her. I so wish my hair would do that fun asymmetric short bob thing, but that is never going to happen ever, not even if I straightened it: it's just too thick. Loved her costume, too. And she was one of the only two who could carry off the soup of cliches that was the dialogue. Half the time she spoke her lines like the character talked in cliches purposely, simply because she thought it was fun. This is possibly the best way to handle being given this dialogue. The other way is the way Jeff Bridges did it: like you really, completely believe everything you say. It sometimes works. Everything else, though, I was kind of wishing I couldn't hear.
Except not, because dude, the soundtrack is FANTASTIC. Watch for Daft Punk, which, perfect. :P
Best scene in the movie? The light-cycle battle. Gorgeous and wicked cool. I also loved its existence because they had previously established that young Sam was an excellent motorcycle rider - they've got a sequence with him weaving between cars at 89 mph, and then evading the police by dodging in front of a bus and secretly jumping off an off-ramp. You get the sense that he's done this a LOT and it's something he's really good at, and when he's brought into the Grid and put into this battle, his line about "I can do this" actually works. And as my friend said, it's not something that would be believable if he were a 15-year-old kid who had just stumbled into this, but it makes sense because of his age and experience. Loved it. And I want to watch just that one scene over and over.
So yeah. Probably not worth seeing in 3D, but it was still pretty awesome.
PS: That cameo, where I leaned over to my friend and went, "Dude, is that Cillian Murphy?" before thinking no, it couldn't be, because why would he have a part that was only three lines? It WAS Cillian Murphy! Also, they really shouldn't have dropped that storyline where they did. Even just a mention at the end would've been nice. ETA: But apparently this is supposed to hint at a possible sequel? I don't know. It just kind of looks like they forgot.
PPS: I continue to be astonished at the number of people who proudly and excitedly go to see sci-fi movies but, if asked, would say that they hate sci-fi. I know it's got a bad rep, guys, but fess up: it's actually AWESOME.
