Okay. That was an odd distraction. Now Adam would get on with the proposing and Kris would proceed with the negating. Any moment. Adam popped the box.
"Adam, before you say anything, I don't think I can do this..."
Adam offered his "I understand you, Kris" face. It seemed a little pained. "Well, yeah. I figured that when you said you wouldn't be proposing to me today, so that means you want me to do it, right? Honest, I think it's too soon, but I'll step up to the goalpost for you--"
"Plate." Kris smiled through his this-is-the-end-here-it-comes fear. Wait? Did he say "too soon?"
"Whatever. I am so not prepared for this. I'd planned to hire a quartet of electric guitars and to write a special song when the time came, but I didn't know you'd expect it so soon and..."
"What do you mean, I'd expect it so soon?" Kris asked. "I don't expect anything! I didn't even know marriage was legal here until five minutes ago! I'm happy to wait. Thrilled! What we're doing now, this is great! You're the one with the... with the engagement ring"
