Flash Fiction

pgs. 51-52 in Flash Fiction Forward "Currents" (story is written in reverse chronological order).  Read story as a class (either one student or teacher can read).  Give students time to brainstorm and come up with their own stories (either fiction or non-fiction stories).  There are 17 sentences in "Currents" so students should be able to write 10 sentences minimum.  Teacher should model a story written.  Mine was about a car crash I was in (non-fiction).

Once students finish writing their stories, they swap with a partner and edit.  To edit, each person must sign the bottom of the page and make a minimum of one suggestion to improve or change the story (beginning or end) and one compliment (something the person wrote that made the story profound, interesting, thoughtful, etc.).

If time allows, go to each group/partner of students and share with entire class one of the stories (either original or edited version).

I did this with seniors and it worked out very well.  It took about 40 minutes total.
