So there I was, driving my dad's car down 34th street. I wanted to turn right on 22nd avenue so I could go to the bookstore or some such place. I turned into what looked like a turn-only lane

I don't know if the US has a similar law (it should, it's common sense) but if you don't have any documents with you when a policeman asks to see them, you've got seven days in which to bring 'em to the station. Which makes sense, 'cos only a foo' would drive around with all their documentation all the time. :)
