So, the weekend before last was my first foray into the world of Empire. I wasn’t really sure what I thought about this, and was mostly going because Duncan wanted to spend another weekend playing with Amber and Leo. Still, we got all kitted out and statted up and off we went to Anvil.
What can I say about Empire? The set was fabulous, the tavern and the senate buildings were better than anything I’ve ever seen on a Larp field before, and that includes Seraphim’s Cathedral of Light. There was a full arena with raised seating for the spectators and a fabulous marketplace with a variety of food on offer. It was also interesting, if a bit disorienting, to see people I knew in a totally different setting. That was all good.
However, I don’t think it’s the game for me. There’s no combat outwith set linears to a fairly restricted area (or at least it seemed to be, I may have only seen a small part of it). It seems very much a political game, and that’s not what I larp for. If I want politics, there’s more than enough in my workplace. Over the whole weekend, I don’t think I spent more than 10 mins IC, and that was when I was wandering around behind the kids selling tea and sweets.
It all boiled down to being a pleasant way to spend a weekend with old friends, but not a larp event.
Which brings us to last weekend, and the Summer Moot at LT. Now, I’ve been having an off year anyway and hadn’t hugely enjoyed playing Tara. There were a few reasons behind this, but mostly it was because I’d had to dramatically change the way I played the character to account for Duncan. Still and all, Tara had become very wet and was no fun to play.
Plot team solved this problem for me before I’d had a chance to hit the field IC, by killing her off on a linear, along with Everard and two others. (Ev died because he came back to try to save her. Aww.) I spent the rest of the weekend playing a teacher from the Orphanage who#d been sent to look after poor Ben Hunter after his tragic loss. She had a broad (if wandering) Cork accent, and treated everyone like a child. Knitted, scolded and was enormously fun to play.
I was a little worried at how Duncan would react to Tara’s death, but he rolled with it and flourished. He had some fabulous roleplay interactions afterwards with several members of the faction, including guilt-tripping Giblet over letting her die. (Poor Godfrey) He has now been adopted by Sid and Meg, as have Ruby and Luke. Alan and I will be hired as tutors for them so we can keep our little gang together.
So, at the Gathering, Anna Von Drecht, complete with comedy Tutonic accent will arrive. I’m going back to being a combat wombat, and am really looking forward to it.
