Tonight I'm going to a booksigning and reading by Charlaine Harris, the author of the southern vampire series that the HBO show True Blood is based on. I love her books and I really like meeting authors of books I like (this will be my 4th or 5th author signing). The actual signing I don't care, I prefer to hear them talk ( Read more... )

No but if you recommended it I will add it to my possibilities list! Have you read The Society of S? It has a sequal The Year of Disappearances. I loved both, very mature coming of age story.. with vampire themes, of course!

We have similar feels about Palin. I think the media has been extremely unfair and downright distasteful. I assumed that she quit because of her family. Her special needs child probably requires more attention as he gets older and she seems like a good mom (even if her daughter got knocked up).

As someone who voted for her running mate and really wanted to like her, I can say that I'm a little relieved that she's shrinking from the public spotlight. I would agree with much of what you've said - that she's been unjustly ridiculed and largely driven out of politics by her opponents - but I have to say that there's a quality about her that's never been quite palatable to me. She's just kind of annoying. If she had been more likeable, I think she would have had sufficient support from her constituency to continue fighting this battle, but perhaps she senses that her time is limited. Resigning could be an act of giving up, or it could be an act of bowing out gracefully before things get even uglier.

Anyway, I'm really hoping she doesn't pop back up for the next election, except, perhaps, as a campaigner for someone more qualified. As much as I love the thought of Republicans putting the first woman in the Oval Office, I don't think she's the one.

One of my main issues with her is her "gee, howdy gosh do!" spirit that is just a little too next-door-neighborly of a persona for one of the top leaders OF THE FREE WORLD. I mean, as much as I try not to be completely blind to politics outside of the USA, it's a fact we are ONE of the most influential nations in the world. I don't want just anyone running the show. She is probably a great mom, and possibly a great governor. I don't know. But the whole thing seemed like a trainwreck waiting to happen. There are other women out there capable of the job.

P.S. Good job paying off your credit card! That's a laudable achievement. So, gonna have a credit card cutting ceremony any time soon??
