You didn't mention what, to me, is the saddest, most infuriating thing about the entire mess.

This same asshole DA didn't charge the white kid because he couldn't find a law on the books against the noose-hanging.

There are days when I look at this country and I think, Jesus H. WEPT, we're as backwards as the damned Taliban. Why in hell aren't hate crimes federal statutes? I rather thought the underlying issue behind the Civil War was states rights versus central government. Last I looked, central government won that one.

Why isn't this federal? How in hell do we allow individual states to not have hate crime laws in place?

I have been following this, too, and it is deeply fucking disturbing that this kind of crap can still happen anywhere in our supposedly enlightened country.
