Fanfic awards

Just been browsing the post by, and replies to, thamiris on the subject of fiction awards (waves). Made me kinda glad I wasn't writing Smallville stuff, to be honest. Only joking. Or well, only partly joking. And judging by what I've heard about Stargate awards, that's a minefield too. Took a peek at the CBFFA stuff and it's not exactly a bowl of cherries ( Read more... )

I have to step in here and say that my comments on the awards have nothing to do with my status as one of the nominees. These awards don't touch me as a writer; I know who likes my stories and who doesn't, and I have no question in my mind who will win these awards in this fandom, here, tomorrow, six months from now. What bothers me is the *process*, a process that's supposed to represent me as a member of the SV fandom. The process in this case, where one of the organizers is chatting up her friends in posts *about* the contest, friends who are nominating her with rabid enthusiasiam even though she's a *mod*--those things feel wrong to me. Maybe it's because I'm an academic, but where I come from you at least make the effort to appear unbiased when organizing these types of things; you don't treat it like you're still in grammar school. I feel the same way about plagiarism in the sense that a certain set of expectations about process has been violated, and it makes me very uncomfortable.

I know you're not talking as a nominee who's doing the sour grapes stuff, hon, and sorry if it sounded like it. And yes, fully agree about 'unbiased' being what feels more comfortable. You're absolutely right that a lot of these awards seem to slide into adolescent-type wrangling and whining, but of course this does NOT mean that all the nominees will act similarly. The whole SV débacle with not-so-subtle plugs by the Mods seems completely ridiculous. I have no idea whether it was done out of ignorance or intent to influence, but it's still wrong ( ... )
