I think many professions would be better off if they were perceived in that way (boiled down, in my mind: humans are humans regardless of their job description). Teachers aren't heroes, and neither are nurses and so we shouldn't expect them (especially as a group) to put some noble purpose ahead of their own humanity. That's how to break a person.

::nods:: A fact that needs to be remembered and is too oft forgotten. As the chef says in Muppets Take Manhattan, "Peoples, is peoples."

It's also interesting in light of the fact that the first argument is often trotted out to argue against military change (integration, women, gays, religion, etc).

The military is codified, like the Catholic Church, so change is slow and the meetings are in secret.
