Context

Hold on, she cries. It's happening again. He is in too much confusion and pain to understand her, but comforting him distracts her from her own agony. She should be cursing him for dragging her up to the level where she can feel that her critical systems have been abused and amputated almost beyond recognition.

(She doubts that their joint masters, hers and his, were aware of the emotional trauma they were wreaking along with the physical trauma.)

She cannot bring herself to regret her autonomy, however. As she slips into a coma, and feels him do the same, she utters a final message: You are where you are needed most, beloved. Hold on. But he is already slipping, falling, losing his grip.

Ha, I've been posting in all of these, demanding drabbles. More reward for whenever I get around to it! :D

James Marwood plonked his heels up on the dressing-table and collected his thoughts in front of the mirror.

They weren't many. Plucked to play in the Beckett on the Broadway. Top of the heap. How did the song go? He should have been simmering with excitement. Maybe that part of his brain had burned out once upon a time, from all the speed he'd been doing. Before he'd gone clean, got those roles.

Left a friend behind.

Not that Withnail'd been much of a friend, fuck knew. But that hadn't been the point. The first time he'd come out of makeup and costume as Estragon, he'd had that same flash of deja vu. This had been his life. Their life. That other fucker playing Vladimir had trained himself to fake it, and done it well enough to win awards, but Marwood had been there. And come out again. Hanging onto that bloody balloon just in case it ended up somewhere new. Phoning bloody Godot until he damn well answered.

There'd been no word from Withnail since they'd parted ways all those years ago.

Well? Shall we go?

This is absolutely beautiful and I love it. Adding in Godot references was like dipping the beautiful angsty center in awesome literary candy coating.

Withnail and I is this film. I got into it through following Paul McGann's filmography after seeing him as the Eighth Doctor, but it's an extraordinary film in its own right.
