We absolutely do. It's called Kids' Help Phone and it's 24/7, bilingual and toll-free from anywhere in the country, I do believe.

omg bria's posting on lj! 3 posts in a week -- it's not a fluke anymore, it's a habit! w000t! we must be vewwy vewwy quiet or she might stop again! *tip-toes and gives the bria a quick smurfhug*

Yeah, we have general help-lines, but sometimes those in the majority fail to see that their own existence is "unmarked", being the default social norm that everything is geared towards, unless otherwise specified. Failing to see that, they may clamour for heterosexual teen helplines, white-pride days, anglo-saxon ethnic festivals, special university bursaries established to help out able-bodied average upper-middle class kids... Failing to acknowledge the initial imbalances of power in society, they may be governed by the best of intentions in their appeals to "fairness", but to anyone who's hearing them speak from a position sensitive to the actual needs of minorities, they just sound like fools (and indeed fools should probably not hold public office :))

I figure, if the people we elect are supposed to speak for the majority but look out for the minorities, and they only have the brains to do one of them, we really don't need it to be the first bit. This is so mean, but things like this make me wish that everyone had some experience of what it's like to be a visible minority. But it's quite possible that even if, say, their beloved spouse suddenly became a quadrapeligic, they'd just leave the spouse rather than have an epiphany and fight for dignity and accesibility for people who can't speak for themselves. Besides, many people think that their particular minority is the only one that matters. Still, you never know.

I did! But apparently it wasn't to the right address, so I sent it to Caprinus for you again. I guess I'm still cursed when it comes to email.

I am completely flabbergasted.
*gets out the stupid paint and puts a freash coat on Rob Ford*
Mind you, I do feel sorry for him.
Upper-class, straight, middle-aged, white-guy is sort of a minority.
And he doesn't know what to do about it.
