Eeek!

We have, in Canada, THREE DAYS worth of food should the US close its borders to us. We get all our food from the States. So when Bush says they will close the borders if we legalise pot, we really don't have much choice. We'd be toast ( Read more... )

They seem content in shooting themselves in the foot to prove a point. I mean, who cares about the long term when half the people believe in imminent Rapture? I would not put it past them to try it, depending on the exact political situation, etc.

Canada is far more rule ridden than America. That's part of the price we pay for choosing government coddling over freedom. American's are just more vocal and active about protesting rules that they don't like. And of course everyone cares more about protesting American rules than they do about acting locally.
Reading a local newspaper or going to municipal meetings, someone can actually do things about stuff.

Today's quiz: Who said "Think globally, act locally"?
(or in the case of shopping, act personally :-)

I am a currently an utter failure as a rational vegetarian and I am often lapsing ignorant of the politics of my food, but I still do my best to shop locally and remain aware of the extent to which my food has to travel to reach me. I'd say that as long as the borders stay open, locality trumps nationality for me -- I'd rather eat an apple from upstate New York than from British Columbia, all other things being equal.

But say the border does get closed: the problem with relying on Canadian supplies only is that so much of the foods to which the general public, myself included, feels entitled to simply will not grow up north, I don't care how many greenhouses we build (and let's not forget most greenhouses are run as pesticide ridden monocultures). Say goodbye to chocolate, bananas, hazelnuts, apricots, oranges... until, anyway, we can import these things without having them pass through the States -- via our ports. Halifax and Vancouver picking up all the traffic that currently goes over the border with the US is impossible for now, ( ... )

If they close the borders completely, we trade things that they don't have (as stated above). Electricity is a big one, and without us, let's just say they will have problems on their own. There's also crude oil. Canada is one of the biggest exporters of crude oil to the US, so that would impact them severely.

However I believe them closing the border to us completely will cause just as many problems on their side.
