I did EverQuest for a while, and tried EverQuest 2 for a bit, and have played Ultima Online occasionally for a while, but, I've never really found an MMO that's grabbed me that much. Haven't even tried WoW (and never played any of the other non-MMO "whatever-Craft" games anyway).
There's just something different about MUDs, which makes me love them.
Did EQ for all of about 20 minutes. Just didn't get into it. Did Asheron's Call for about two weeks. Same story. WoW stuck in a unique way, although I'm not sure why. It's simply better than most MMOs.
Also, now that my wife is playing (she wasn't when I got hooked originally, but has been for over two years now), well, that's all the more reason for me to stick around. :D She doesn't do MUDs. I love 'em still, but she can't get into 'em.
Yeah, that's a good reason. My fiancée plays some games, mostly puzzle games and platformers and racing and such like that. As far as games on a computer, mostly just little quick games like Cubis and Sally's Salon and such like that. Tried to get her into RPGs, but, they're not really her thing, so, doubt any sort of MMO or MUD or whatnot would have any appeal to her. Showed her Terris once or twice, but, no interest. Still, obviously I can't complain, and I love her anyway.
As far as WoW, I've thought once or twice of trying it, but, just never have. Does it matter if one hasn't played any of the WarCraft or whatever other Craft games are out there before? Was in the Beta for D&D Online, and it was pretty fun, but, didn't follow up on it after it was released. I've thought of giving Lord of the Rings Online a shot too, but, haven't really looked into it much. I guess I'm just kind of wishy-washy when it comes to MMOs.
I can understand the whole "Thought about it" bit. I really wouldn't have gotten into it on my own, most likely, but Voldais from Terris got me into it. :D
My experience with the warcraft series prior to getting into WoW was that I'd played WC2 like, once, and had friends who were all "OMG WC3 is AMAZING" but haven't ever played it myself. If you get into the lore, it's neat that it's the same world from those games, but, it's certainly not a requirement. I mean, my wife's at max level (currently 70), has some really nice gear, plays a good bit, and this is literally the first video game she's ever played for more than 20 minutes, outside of maybe Super Mario Bros as a child, so, yeah. Prior experience doesn't matter.
I understand why you're that way with MMOs - I am too. It just doesn't really call out the same way that MUDs did.
