NASA’s great exo-biological announcement, not quite what you may have expected

But none the less very cool.Anyone who has even a cursory interest in science, or astronomy specifically, or space heard about the “big announcement” of NASA had yesterday for a few days now. NASA was working hard to keep the whole thing hush-hush, so speculation abounded. My personal belief tended towards some discovery on Titan; not life per-se ( Read more... )

Glad to see somebody else gets it. :-D This is an extremely exciting discovery -- biochemistry and biophysics together constitute the bedrock of all life and life-processes anywhere, and this shows not only that life in the universe can take different pathways at that most fundamental level, but can do so on Earth, as well. And this difference in biochemistry is as fundamental as you can get for carbon-based life, too, almost as radical as finding, say, a gaseous life-form on Earth, or one living inside a black smoker (volcanic vent on the ocean floor). I wonder what else remains right here on Earth for us to discover, especially when it comes to such essential things.

I know, this is an amazing discovery, but when NASA spoke of "alien life" most folks (including me) assumed something very different. Still, it is indeed astounding. Life will find a way, won't it?
