Have you told your parents about the situation? I'm thinkin that if you explained to them that you're wanting to find a job because you'd like to take on more responsibility and also because you have upcoming things you'd like to contribute money towards, then the transition from dad's wallet to a pay check will be a lot smoother. It'd be awfully rough to land a job and raise the money completely on your own right now (also taking peepeedeedlydee's two points into consideration), and you may end up unintentionally sabatoging yourself.
I'm not trying to say that you're gonna screw it up or that you can't do it...I've just had (a few) experiences where I decided I was going to take care of something all by myself and screwed it up and wish I'd let others help more in the beginning. That's why I think letting them in on your quest for responsibility would be the best way to show them you're serious about it.
hey, the only reason I didn't have a summer job after my junior year is that I flunked algebra 2 and was having to make it up. So... yeah. And please don't think whatever crap job you get now = career. It's a necessary evil to get you some sweet sweet cash. And don't wait tables, that really sucks. Just my 2 cents.
