The case for Collins

Dec 12, 2010 04:05

I have just spent nearly two weeks playing 72 games of Collins. I'll spare the details of my performances in the two respective tournaments. Nothing to really write about there, except that I probably will need three years to master the Collins and the intricacies of the game associated with that book. Brian, this is a well thought out, important post.

Thank you for expending the energy and time to write it.

It was fun hanging with you in Johor Bahru, I am sure we'll do it again, soon.

this is a great post. i am trying to get into it and i have to admit it was pretty discouraging when i couldn't even guess what 90 of the top 100 sevens could possibly be. the idea that games are more competitive, though, is certainly appealing. i hope you will consider coming to our tournament in february!

Agreed! From my own limited study in Collins, I had the feeling of "starting over," and these new words are generally impossible to spot without studying them. I like the extra challenge. Plinking down STONERAW# against Bing some time ago felt really good. A bingo of that probability from OWL2 wouldn't be anything as exhilarating.

If players like Odette Rio (Philippines), Helen Gipson (Scotland), Chris May (Australia), Tamas Adrian (Romanian resident of Japan), & countless others had tournaments to attend in North America, they'd likely vacation in the land of multiple tournaments every weekend. For anyone who has the tiniest social inclination, the presence of such likable & interesting people would go a long way toward compensating for the inconvenience of learning some Maori & Afrikaans words.

This. Exactly why we should be playing SOWPODS instead of OWL only. Thanks, Brian, for an excellent post.

There's at least another, but I'm drawing a blank (haha).

We're hoping to start at least semi-regular sessions here in Centreville after Jan. 1.
