My brain thinking.
In reviewing the song "take lots with alcohol" by alkaline trio, Ive come to believe that its an extended metaphor for the 12 step program.
Heres we go:
Hello what the hell am I doin' here
That's a really nice suit
This is a really comfortable chair
See I don't know if you can help me or not
Cause I don't feel sick
But the pains in my head have almost put me
Underground
(STEP 1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable.)
It seems like, whomever this is about, is in a dr's office most likely a psychologist or at an intervention, admiting to be powerless "see i dont know if you can help me or not, cause i dont feel sick, But the pains in my head have almost put me underground"- Right there, i dont feel suck, But, the pain has put me underground.
I don't really care if I'm healthy or not
Just clean my head up doc
(STEP 2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.)
The person still doesnt seem to care about their health, but ultimately does because they want help "clean my head up doc"
I'll give you anything you want
(STEP 3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.)
Now the person is admiting, "ill give you anything you want"
See I don't know why I don't fall in love
Well maybe I know why and maybe you could make it stop
(STEP4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.) The person making a fearless moral inventory of "i dont know why, I dont fall in love"...brilliance in my eyes, but im bias.
Then we'll cut it up and bury it and leave it
Underground
(STEP5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.)
The person, admiting to his wrongs, and "cuting it up and burrying them and leaving them underground"
And I'll take to wishing and fall under
Sleeping safe and sound
(STEP6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.)
Here, taking to wishing instead of wishing and sleeping safe and sound, removing all the defects.
Just give me medicine prescribe me anything
(STEP7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings)
Just knock me out and walk me through the door
The person here, by reciving medication is asking to help remove his shortcomings
I have no desire to see through my own eyes anymore
(STEP8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.)
Making amends byt not wanting to see through his own eyes, meaning, the alcoholic eyes, wanting to change and amend the old and get ready for the new
Hello what the hell are you doing here
You made a really strange face
This is a really uncomfortable air
(9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.)
Here, Making direct amends to someone they obviously hurt, Makes it an akward confrontatio, "strange face"/"comfortable air"
I see I'm boring you, maybe I bore myself too
That's why I need help, I'm cleaning blood off dusty shelves (
STEP10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.)
Taking personal inventory and promtly admiting "thats why i need help"
I been cut up in this room so many times it might take days
And those stress cracks in the wood
How nicely the soak up the stains
(STEP11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.)
Here the person is trying to improve their conscious contact with god "I been cut up in this room so many times it might take days"
praying for knowledge of his will for us and the power to carry out, "and those stress cracks int he wood how nicely they soak up the stains" the stains being the person before and the stress cracks relieving them of that.
Been telling myself these jokes for so long well so long
I'm a has been who is heckled on the stage
(STEP12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.) "been telling myself these jokes for so long, well so long"- here the person has a spritual awakening, getting sober was the joke, so long to the joke.
Carrying out the message to practice these principles is put in "I'm a has been who is heckled on the stage" the has been was the alcoholic, not the new sober person.
