I'm proud of myself. I was assertive today. I had a bad feeling about my new co-worker at the cafe from the first time he worked with us a few weeks ago -- just too smarmy, outgoing in a creepy way. I can't believe that people can fire employees for being out - grrr, that makes me furious! aaarrrgghghh! I hate red states sometimes!

Maybe your other Israeli friends have been in the states longer and are more familiar with American sensitivities about personal space? Because I would agree that Israelis don't have the same conceptions about touching, they are even more touchy than Europeans. You may have just given him his first lesson on American culture.

Sometimes you come across a sleazy Jewish man. It happens. In the face of female strength, they will falter and defer to your wisdom, so just keep being assertive.

Way to go, Mary. Culture's not really an excuse...if you feel uncomfortable, there's no good reason to put up with it.
