I'm gonna need to have more yarn to finish this scarf. I have just finished off my first ball and it made about 9 inches long. . . . and since it came in a "kit" I don't know if it would be easy to find matching yarn or not? Or what color(s) should I get to do different colors? This one is a blue. . . that has light blue and then gets darker ( Read more... )

I could help you but I'm not there. I would say, don't try and match it, because you won't be able to. An option is always to pick up stitches at the beginning and knit on an extra stripe or so in another color, and then knit on stuff at the end. (So the middle's vareigated blue, and the beginning and end are, like, plain blue or something.) If you want to do this, I can help you over Thanksgiving or something. Also, you could find another color you like, and knit the same amount in the new color, so the scarf is in two pieces, sort of.

If you want to do the different color, I would say try and find a pink or something that vareigates the same way. If you can't find it at Michael's or Jo-Ann Fabrics (P.S., the Michael's by the corner of Monroe and Talmadge is the best place to go), there's always Fiberworks or that little shop on Secor -- the ladies there will definitely help you.

Idiot me just noticed that it only made 9 inches. Here's an option: go pick up balls of yarn (MAKE SURE THEY'RE ALL THE SAME FIBER COMPOSITION, like 100% wool or 100% acrylic or 80% acrylic 20% wool or whatever) in other vareigated messes, like greens and reds and whatever, and just keep knitting about nine inches of each until you have a scarf. One scarf takes about a thousand yards of yarn, and that's, um, almost sixteen ounces of worsted-wt yarn. Also check that the yarn is the same thickness as the yarn you're using.

To change colors, just tie the new one on at the end of a row and keep knitting (or purling). Leave a couple inches so you can weave it in later.

Are you doing stockinette? (one row knit, one row purl, etc. it makes little 'v's and looks like what you're used to, in sweaters and such.)

No, I'm just knitting. And I figured that another color would probably be best because it would be impossible to match for the simple fact that unless it's 110% on, it'll look COMPLETELY OFF. . . . it's better to have it a few shades off, rather than 1/2 shade. That just looks shitty, instead of contrasting ( ... )

Wide, not thick.

Yeah, sounds like you need to take it to an expert. I'd so totally help you but, er, I sort of can't. :)

Are you sure it's not 18 st/4 in? because that's 4.5 st/in which is stereotypical worsted wt on 5mm (size 8) needles.

Anyway, catch me over IM & we'll get this straightened out. So to speak. :-D
