This is so seriously the best thing ever on a day like this. It made my day, totally. Aside from the fact that it makes me so desperately want to huuuuuuuuuuug Ace, I just adore the way you've written Seven and the TARDIS here, like in this one instance they're both 'parents' disagreeing over how to take care of their child. And it's in keeping with the TARDIS' view of Ace; even though I don't believe Seven feels paternally toward Ace, his sense of wanting to protect her, and feeling responsible for her, is a very ancient feeling in so many creatures, regardless of the nature of their relationship, and rings so true here. I love how they're so close and bonded that they don't argue the traditional way; the Doctor shows his displeasure by depriving his TARDIS of his normal affection for her, and that seems more damning. Oh, hell, I could just keep going, waxing poetic about this. Stop me! :P
But don't you stop. Take the plot bunnies I've given you, and breed, I say! Expeditiously. :D
I cannot stress enough how happy it makes me that you liked this prompt, seriously. I wrote it for Sarah, but it also deals so heavily with Seven that I didn't want to disappoint you. (Also, I will do your audio commentary on it tonight.) And I do get the sense that there's a fine line between 'parental' and 'lover' with the Doctor and his companions, since he treats them with that same sense of over-protectiveness as one would a child. It's one of the fascinating things with any Doctor/someone relationship, because I just don't believe he sees love the same way us humans do. But whyever should I want you to stop waxing poetic? I'm far too conceited to want the praise to end! :D
Disappoint me? Bah! That's impossible. Well, actually, there is one way you could disappoint me, and that would be if you stopped writing. So don't stop. Ever. Or you'll make me sad and woeful. Squee! I can't wait to hear audio commentary on this. Annnnnd, as soon as I post that Seven/TARDIS fic I sent you, I'm going to work on the audio commentary for that. :D I completely agree on the fine line; even when he seems to love certain companions in a much different way, he still never loves the way humans do, which is why no one can really understand him completely, except his TARDIS. *giggle* Yes, it's wonderful to have one's ego inflated.
I have no real intention to stop writing anytime soon, I promise. But eeeeeeee, commentary! *happy!flail* I want want want want! It's hard keeping in mind that the Doctor and TARDIS perceive love differently than humans, because I want to write it the way I know love, but I can't, or I'm not true to my concept of the muse. I totally love ego stroking, though!
Peer pressure is evil, don't you go praising it. *grin* I'm very glad you liked this, though! I had fun writing it. I also love that you can call her sweet and endearing in this, because I would have to agree! She's cruel and mean, but she does it for all the right reasons, of course. As for Seven, I'm really happy he turned out proper, because I'm always terrified of writing him. Of writing any Doctor, really, but Seven is particularly complex. The note about hypocrisy was so a must-have in this story, too, because yes, yes he is.
Wow. I don't know if I have to words to say how amazing this is. Amazing, and heartbreaking, and so wonderfully full of emotion while still being slightly distant and alien like the TARDIS is. And Oh! I just... wow... From the very beginning when she labels Kurtz an "it" instead of a he... in a strange parallel it's like what Hitler did to the Jews, made them no longer human so they were easy to kill.
And the interaction between Seven and the TARDIS, and her not understanding, and her logic as to why she doesn't tell him, and the way she's both talking to Seven and watching over Ace (it makes me smile the way you've included bits form my fic) and the hurt when Seven only talks to her out loud...
I could ramble for ages, and quote the whole thing. I've read it a million times over already.
I am so, so. so, so glad you liked this, especially since it ended up being a bit different than what I'd originally planned. I'd wanted more Ace interaction, but the fic was all: NOPE, you get what I give you! But I could help but reference your fic, since that got me wanting to write this in the first place!
You always note these interesting parallels, but that is very true. It's easier to dispose of something if you don't consider it to have sentience. And really, what could possibly hurt Ace that does have sentience, you know? But yes, I do like that parallel, considering who Kurtz is.
I was so terrified to write Seven, I cannot stress this enough. He scares me because he's so very intelligent and I'm afraid I'm going to make him dumb. My favourite part of this piece, though, were those moments where the TARDIS ignores Seven to watch over Ace, one, because it referenced your amazing fic and two, because I liked how it contrasted between the TARDIS' thoughts on Kurtz and her argument with the Doctor, and how she actually does
