A balm, if not a cure, can be found in the music of Jim White, who back in 2001 described being superwhite.
No Such Place is still my favorite of his albums, even though the critics seem to prefer his other two. What do I know, other than an album with a song entitled "Handcuffed to a Fence in Mississippi" and with a song that begins "'Round about an hour before sunrise, she drags his body down to the edge of the swollen river" appeals to my sensibilities.
Actually I was quoting a writer (whose name I have forgotten) who was paraphrasing Moby Dick to describe being confronted with a blank piece of pape on his typewriter and having writer's block. right now my music listening has been split between the new Punk-o-rama colection, the Gang of Four and the Black-Eyed Peas.
Nice to meet you too. Try Unacknowleged Legislation by Christopher Hitchens. Its a collection of essays about various writers and their political impact. Hitchens is a good writer and a notorious contrarian who places intellectual honesty over public opinion or party politics.

Hi, frabjousdave told me to come here. Welcome to LJ! Check out the Swingin' Jungle.
So I'm nearly 27, a moon-child (my sign is Cancer) and I fundraise for a non-profit children's mental health charity. I like the outdoors, just not the sun. I live in Kent, with my husband vanderbolt. I like reading reality based fiction as well as political novels. I also like Harry Potter and sled dog books.

You should try Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon books. Barr is a national park ranger and so is Pigeon. Each book takes lace in a different park and draws upn the park's history to bolster the story. I worked for a telemarketing firm that did a lot of charitable fundraising (Special Olympics, NPR and public television among others) about twenty years ago. Unfortunatly the company seemed hell-bent on destroying all the good will the groups had built up.

Telemarketing in non-profit is hard. It does tend to get people's goats if you do it the wronge way. That said, I've done small phon-a-thons with volunteers and that seems to work well, as long as the callers are volunteers, or very involved in the organization (like students at a college).

It wasn't so much our status as professionals that bothered people as it was the company's greed. They started contacting people more and more frequently and each time would ask for several times the previous donation. In the long run they probably cost the non-profits more in bad publicity and lost donors thanthey brought in in new donations.
