[RL with Edgeworth]

Iris blinked, puzzled, as Mr. Laurice's promised help came into view. True, Mr. Edgeworth was a lawyer... but if their last conversation was any indication, then he wouldn't exactly be the first person to leap to her defense. And isn't he a prosecutor, anyway?Well, it wasn't so strange that he'd do something for a friend, even if he didn't ( Read more... )

"I'm not the one you owe your thanks to, Sister." Edgeworth met her smile with a calculating stare, his voice cold. His mood hadn't improved since his visit to the hospital; the blessing of obtaining a rental car at an ungodly hour of the morning had been blunted by yet another harrowing cab ride to get it, and getting into the detention center earlier than usually allowed had taken considerable effort.

The only bright spot in the morning had been his second visit to Wright's hospital room. Wright had been asleep when he'd arrived, and aside from Wright offering him a few personal effects that might have been useful in his investigation, Edgeworth had been spared from further uncomfortable discussions on subjects he wasn't ready to approach.

"Still, I appreciate it." She bit her lip, looking down. "Um, is Mr. Wright... Is he going to be all right?" She squeezed her eyes shut, feeling tears well up, and behind them a welter of emotions, too many to name. There was grief, yes, and shock, and the nauseating certainty that something had gone horribly wrong. And fear, too, and the ever-familiar guilt - I've done it again, I've hurt him again - running through her like a second spine. "Mr. Laurice said that he was hurt... That he might even be..."

"'Mr. Laurice' may be a willing source of information, but he's hardly a reliable one." Her show of distress didn't go unnoticed, but Edgeworth had too much experience interrogating seemingly distraught witnesses to take such displays at face value, regardless of how genuine they seemed. Her apparent concern for Wright hadn't extended to giving him the answers he needed. "Wright's condition is stable," Edgeworth continued, and watched her reaction closely.

Thank God. She breathed a sigh of relief, feeling a little bit of the tension loosen and ease. But... "'Stable'? Um... How sick is he, still?"
