Matt and I watched part of the debate when our Internet wasn't being flaky. I thought McCain was surprisingly natural and talky, although he had this stupid smirk whenever Obama was talking. And that whole bit about "I believe in the American spirit" was laughable. Tell me specifics on what you'll do; don't give me platitudes. I didn't really think either one moved past scripted responses; the material was the same we've been hearing for weeks now. I was hoping Obama would really shine.

I saw, stylewise, Obama be unable to put in that one-liner or that zing that would really slam to door on McCain's candidacy. It is to McCain's credit that his style was so well done.

But I suppose I didn't watch enough of it :(

I think it was a tie. Obama really showed that he knew what he was talking about but McCain's deadpanning left him scrambling almost for some of the time. I didnt like McCain's attitude, though; for all the yakking he did about how bipartisan he was, Obama showed a hell of a lot more openness and tried to point out some of their similarities while McCain was busy mudslinging. I dont think we need another president who goes straight down party lines with a knee-jerk response; Obama did a good job illustrating that he is capable of overcoming that.
