As some of you probably know, I play Chrono from Chrono Crusade. And I’m here to pimp it out like the obsessive fangirl I am.
Warning: The following contains some spoilers, fangirling, links to TV Tropes and sometimes poorly written scanlations.
Chrono Crusade is about Chrono, a demon, and Rosette, a nun. Together, the pair of exorcists work to clear out demons and supernatural beings that threaten the populace in 1920’s America. Along the way, they make new allies and search for clues about Rosette’s missing brother, Joshua, who was kidnapped by Aion, a demon with ties to Chrono’s past. The story starts out somewhat slapstick and episodic as Chrono and Rosette bumble through several missions, but as it continues it gets darker starts to build towards events that will not only affect the main characters, but the entire fate of the world. It’s an action-adventure/supernatural romp with a little bit of horror, a little bit of romance, and even some sci-fi due to some spoilerrific revelations towards the end of the manga.
“Okay,” you say to me, “but where in the world can I find it?” Well, ADV released both the manga and the anime in the US. (I’m not sure if there’s any European releases, though…you might have to research that.) The manga translation is mostly very well-written and readable, although there’s a few errors in it, particularly in the early volumes. (Nothing really major, just annoying.) The DVDs have the sub and dubs, unedited. And the dub has 1920s slang added into the dialogue, which is hilarious and awesome.
If you’re only going to check into one or the other...read the manga. The characters are more fleshed out, and the story fits together a little better. The anime isn’t completely unwatchable, and it has some great actors in both the Japanese and English versions of the cast, buuut…overall, the manga’s just better. Also, all of the current crew is manga-version, so in the following character profiles I’m going to be focusing on those versions of the characters.
Anyway, while we already have a few members of the core cast here (
Chrono,
Rosette,
Aion and
Shader), we’d love to have more. LOTS more! Why? Because this series has some AWESOME characters.
Azmaria Hendric. Originally from Portugal, Azmaria is a 12-year-old girl with the power to sprout angelic wings and heal anyone with her song. This makes her one of the Apostles, children chosen by the Astral Line (a “river of spirits” in the sky) to serve humanity. She was adopted by a man that wanted to use her powers to revive his dead wife, but Chrono and Rosette saved her and she joined the Magdalene Order soon after. Although her powers are strong, she’s suffered greatly and lost many people she’s loved because of them, so she often doubts herself. She’s also
sorta a klutz (although the anime exaggerated it). However, despite her failings and insecurity she always tries her best to be a helpful member of Chrono and Rosette’s group, and in the end of the manga her spiritual knowledge and growing determination prove invaluable.
Azmaria also…
Satella Harvenheit. A bounty hunter, demon expert and “jewel witch” from Germany. Satella originally crosses paths with Rosette and the gang when they begin their journey to where Joshua is and get caught up in one of her demon summoner busts. Beautiful, rich, and self-sufficient, Satella often pushes people away and seems to prefer to work alone, but soon comes to appreciate her new friend’s company. Her powers as a witch allow her to summon spirits from jewels to fight for her. Her main motivation (similar to Rosette) is to find the demon responsible for the deaths of her family, and to learn what happened to the sister she lost in the chaos of the battle. Halfway through the manga, she discovers that Aion was the one responsible, and her sister is now in his clutches.
Satella also…
Joshua Christopher. Rosette’s little brother and the person that got her involved in this whole big mess. Like Azmaria, Joshua is an Apostle, and has the power to heal people with
glowy energy from his hands. Sadly, his powers also caused him to be very ill, and he was unable to use them on himself. Aion soon discovered him and decided to take advantage of his desire to be strong, offering him the incredible power of Chrono’s horns if he joined him. Joshua agreed and put the horns on his head, which gave him all the power that Aion promised him, but also made him
more insane than a mob of preteens at a Jonas Brothers concert. The visions and telepathic “noise” he receives through his horns causes him to wander through his life as if he’s half-awake, and he quickly begins to lose his sense of self and many of his memories. In fact, the first time he sees Rosette again after he’s kidnapped, he doesn’t even recognize her. However, despite (or partially because of) his insanity, he’s a fearsome fighter and a loyal minion of Aion.
Joshua also…
Florette “Fiore” Harvenheit. Simply put, a servant of Aion and Joshua’s maid. She cooks, she cleans, she takes care of Joshua when he’s having one of his freak-out moments, and…she is secretly
a ninja. Or, actually, a powerful jewel witch, but same thing, right?
Yeah, remember Satella’s missing sister? This is her. Spoiler, but as soon as her powers are revealed it’s a little obvious anyway. Although she does have some memories of her former life, she considers Florette “dead” and thinks of herself as “just a doll”. Despite that, she does seem to hold some affection for Satella still…she treats Joshua almost as a surrogate sibling, and eventually encourages him to confront Rosette even when she can't or won't speak to her own sister.
Fiore also…
Sister Kate Valentine. Rosette’s overworked superior. Remember how in the Pink Panther movies Inspector Clouseau had a police chief for a boss that pretty much went insane because of all of the stupid, stupid things he did to solve cases? Yeah, that’s Rosette and Sister Kate’s relationship, only with more nun habits and catfights. Deep down, she actually really cares for Rosette, and is almost like a mother-figure to her-which is part of the reason she’s so hard on her, because she really wants Rosette to do well. She’s just a little high-strung and nearly as hot-tempered as Rosette, so the two clash at times. She’s also somewhat suspicious of Chrono because she knows he’s a demon and is hesitant to trust him…although the more that Chrono does to prove himself to her, the more she begins to soften towards him. In the end, she holds no bitterness towards him, even though Chrono makes a really horrible mistake that costs her the position she has in the Order.
Overall, Sister Kate is one tough cookie. Remember that this is a woman in the 1920s that’s in a very high position in a religious order, and it seems pretty clear she’s earned it.
Sister Kate also…
Father Ewan Remington. If Sister Kate is “mommy”, then Father Remington is “daddy”. Father Remington was the one that first recruited Rosette and Chrono into the Order, and has served as something of a guardian to her ever since. While Kate is often harsh and stern with Rosette, Remington takes the “good cop” approach and actively encourages her…sometimes to the point that other characters accuse him of spoiling and coddling Rosette. Handsome, outgoing and charismatic, Father Remington has quite a following among the younger nuns of the Order (including Rosette herself) and knows it. But beneath the jovial exterior is a strong warrior, and a determined man that’s had to get through a lot of darkness to end up where he is.
Father Remington also…
Edward “The Elder” Hamilton. Normally just called “Elder” (seriously, I had to go to Wikipedia to look up his real name), this priest is the Order’s go-to guy for the latest in demon-fighting gadgets. Most of the weapons that the Order uses in their battles with demons are the fruits of his research. This would probably make him a highly respected member of the Magdalene Order…if he wasn’t such a big pervert. Yes, The Elder’s hobbies include panty raids, sneaking into the women’s showers, and playing “try to look under the nun’s skirt!” whenever Rosette stops by to pick up more ammo for her missions. But behind his goofy personality is a sharp wit-he normally figures out what’s going on far before anyone else does, and he’s an extremely valuable person to have on your side…which is probably why the Order puts up with him so much.
The Elder also…
Rizelle. One of the Sinners, the demons that followed Aion out of Pandaemonium, and the first one Rosette meets besides Chrono and Aion himself. Sent by Joshua to retrieve his sister, Rizelle spends most of her time “on-screen” trying to capture Rosette. Using spiders attached to webs, she’s able to take over people’s bodies and control them from a distance-hence her title, “Puppet Master”. Rizelle is very sneaky and prefers to work from behind the scenes, but when angered she’ll lash out and face her opponent directly. Behind her creepy persona, though, is a woman who’s desperately, madly in love with Aion, and will do anything to get his attention.
Rizelle also…
Genai. Another one of the Sinners-and one with a chip on his shoulder, as you can see. Genai was in love with Rizelle, but was constantly ignored by her while she chased after Aion. After her death, he’s angry and bitter towards the humans that work with Aion, taking out his anger on them. He’s not an entirely bad guy, but very, very flawed, and (like all the sinners) has a lot of issues to work through. He appears to have never let go of the cowboy sort of style, even though the other sinners have moved on to the 1920s.
Genai also…
Viede. The final member of the Sinners who currently isn’t in the City. Quiet and imposing, Viede is somewhat of the muscle of the group and looks as though he’d be a big lug, but he’s actually one of the most thoughtful of the members. He’s generally very observant and calm…unless you mess with Aion. He’s VERY loyal to him, maybe more than any of the other members, and when he feels that Aion’s being attacked he’ll rush in to defend him. Out of all the Sinners, he seems to be the one with the least amount of issues…maybe.
Viede also…
And so, that’s a selection of the characters available for you to app! There’s a few minor ones I didn’t cover buuut those would probably be a little difficult, so…yeah. These are the main ones.
And if my massive tl;dr hasn’t convinced you that you want to app from our series…Aion has composed a song to try and convince you.
