My psych text book from two years ago says that the top three factors in determining whether a relationship will spark (but not necessarily if it will survive) are:
1. Proximity
2. Physical attractiveness
3. Similarity

What the textbook misses out is a new factor in relationships which we haven't developed the social rules to accomodate yet - the internet.
An example: Thanks to the web I'm still in contact with someone who I had a fling with some years ago on another continent; we're friends and communicate regularly and if either of us ever travel to each other's part of the world then, well...
There been a recent spate of divorces blamed on the friends reunited school of websites - it's now in our power to track down old flames and, as the marriage gets stale after five or ten years ago doing so can seem increasingly attractive. As travel is now so easy and commonplace proximity is no longer, truly, the factor it once was.
